The Laughing EP release Friday at Club DeVille was a blast. The mural painting went off without a hitch and look gorgeous. Not to mention that all of the performances were stellar.
Magic Surprise was flawless as always. The Cari and Jason Band was more somber than I expected but I suppose that is why their songs exist outside of Belaire and/or Voxtrot. The simplicity and earnestness of a drummer and a keyboardist was refreshing and their sharp matching outfits weren’t too shabby either. Both Cari and Jason deserve to be watched and be payed attention to in any and all of their many creative side projects. They are all so good sometimes it is tricky to keep track of what is a side project! The Laughing was in top form. They had a 6 person incarnation which included Danny Reisch from the Lemurs (adding to the existing fanatic percussion work of Grant Van Amburgh) and Abram Shook who recorded the EP the group, left to focus on his own project (the Great Nostalgic), and will always be associated around town as that guy who wails on the bass and the baritone sax. Needless to say, the stage was packed full of great talent. The band played a fine mix of material off Tiger Cry, Jungle and a few off whatever their next release will be. One thing is for sure; Jungle is just a thematic taste of what else they have in store. Pick up Jungle EP online HERE.
