jesus grow a handlebar mustache for me- john

Last Thursday the Austin Beauty Bar was set afire by a wild pack of family dogs who performed under the name Pataphysics.  The herky jerky dancey zolo rock sounds made feet tap and smiles grace faces.  Set closer “Jesus Grow a Handlebar Mustache for Me” was an obvious highlight because as far as I am concerned it is the best song about a mustache out there.  The only other competition is by the children’s novelty act  the Telephone Company which Pataphysics frontman Patrick Healy and drummer Chef comprise.  The men know good tunes about lip hair and possibly even social commentary.   Pataphysics is a super group of Austin underground rock with all or most of the members having their fingers in other Business Deal Records projects..

La Snacks played all the jams and tighter than I had ever seen them with set highlight including “Emo Kind of Love” and a song about Jesse Jackson, which by the way- there are not NEARLY enough of these days.

Stay Gold was really fun as the young masses of Thursday night party going professionals danced blindly to every jam places in front of them.  It was a blast!

Thanks to everyone who came out and had a good time!

harold and maude vinyl- john

Just in time for Valentine’s Day Cameron Crowe has lovingly assembled the complete soundtrack to everyone’s favorite rom-com about a free spirit and a suicide obsessed Bud Cort- Harold and Maude.

The whole score is composed by Cat Stevens and I can only imagine that listening to it on remastered and collectable limited edition vinyl is the way to go.  Crowe teamed up with Vinyl Films to take the soundtrack to the next level with  “An extensive 36-page full-color booklet filled with never-before-seen photographs and an oral history of the making of the film and the music, as told by the filmmakers and participants. Also included is a bonus 7" single with unreleased versions of "Don't Be Shy" and "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out", two suitable-for-framing posters, and much more! “

This sounds like a Mecca of an item to own for that special someone who “enjoy knives”, Six Feet Under and that riff in Knocked Up  between Jonah Hill and a bearded Martin Starr:

Jonah: How did it feel changing your name from Cat Stevens to Yusef Islam?
Martin: It was really awkward.
Jonah: See ya... Scorsese on coke.

late savy fav- john

So, we are waaay behind on this one but I am still hearing about how good the Les Savy Fav show was at Emo’s two weekends ago.   Please enjoy this play by play by friend to partyends Skipper.  We have never done the “guest post” thing (read: copy and pasting a personal email) before and probably will not again…. But I this show just sounds too damn exciting.

“so. the show. man. Les Savy Fav. so good.

Tim Harrington and company did not disappoint. he started the show in a safari jacket, think Colonel Mustard, as well as a pith helmet. he was using the mike stand as a kind of rifle, aiming it around the crowd. I turned to my friend and said it'd be great if he did a Hemingway. And not one minute later, he has the base of the mike stand in his mouth and pulled the trigger. yes! he introduced the band as the Honey Bees and then launched into the first song, losing first the pith helmet and then the jacket during the first chorus and second chorus, respectively. I think he was wearing some kind of snap shirt but that didn't stick around very long.

He kept referring to the band as the Honey Bees from somewhere in Florida, never calling themselves Les Savy Fav (they're from Brooklyn, right?). he had the crowd chant, ‘we are the Honey Bees’ at one point and declared that the Honey Bees were now the largest band in the world.

He was completely and utterly off the hook, a mad man, if you will, running around on stage, mostly without a shirt or just a t-shirt -- and it was cold. He began looping the microphone cord over one of the rafters and tried to hang himself, not dead, just like a marionette.

it was a great show. I'm so glad that I went.”

I cut out the parts about Skipper eating pizza and the encore(s). All hail Les Savy Fav.  Have a good Tuesday!

everyday/ ghosthustlin- john

I am completely revitalized with Ghosthustler. After canceling a show at the Mohawk, playing an awkward set at the DFA/Factory People ACL after party and having extreme equipment malfunctions at Wall of Sound fest I had decided that if you can’t say anything nice about a electro dance rock outfit from the heart of Dentron Texas it is best not to say anything at all.  But damn- their recordings just keep rocking my world. I have turned a new leaf.  These two new jams are out of control.  I have faith in things going well for them this year at sxsw and that is the understatment of the year.

First up is the track that premiered on the latest We Shot Jr. Mixtape called Only Me to Trust.  Brace yourself, this track is completely attention grabbing and as exciting as Parking Lot Nights. Part Private, part Chromeo, all inconceivably dancey.

Next up is a BRAND NEW (read: 3 hours old) re-edit by Central Booking’s Austin delegate Prince Klassen of an older track called Busy Busy Busy. He puts a harsher edge and bigger beat behind their ‘blog house’ jam and makes it EVEN MORE dance floor ready. Word is CB will be putting out a GH 12 inch that might as well already be sold out on Turntable Lab and Good Records alike.  As soon as you see any sort of preorder option any where get out the paypal login info and hop to it.

Despite this band having a questionable live show track record in my book, upon close inspection I have determined that the band can do no wrong recording wise.  Download these tracks and impress your friends, sit back and wait for undeniable blip on Forkcast to start the Ghosthustler world takeover.

anticon emo's ticket giveaway- john

Anticon is one of those labels that is tried and true.  There are a handful of them out there (Merge, frenchkiss etc) that can’t seem to do wrong.  Will I feel this way in 10 years?  Probably.  They put out original hip-hop with fascinating production and have an insane DIY/collective allegiance that is to be commended.  Whenever any of their artists roll thru Austin it is always a cause for the fans to come out of the woodwork and tomorrow night inside Emo’s is no different. We are thilled to be able to giveaway a pair of guestlist passes!

One-man barbed wire fast noise machine Daniel Francis Doyle opens up on the local portion of the bill.  Austin Sound recently did a nice feature on the Furniture Records mainstay and “leaked” two brand new mp3s that you should DEF grab to impress your “chunky, depressed…early 20's” friends.

Telephone Jim Jesus is one of those white dudes who can pull of dreadlocks no problem.  The 'anti k fed' if you will.  In addition to putting out a recent GREAT solo album homeboy is also a registered deputy marriage commissioner who recently performed an oh so official and legal exchanging of vows for my Californian newlywed peeps the Landerpants.  If getting authorized to perform a marriage for friends isn’t a sign of an upstanding citizen then I don’t know what is.  This dude is an Anticon MVP by transitive property.  I was always big Restiform Bodies fan so I am so happy that Telephone Jim is carrying on the fine tradition.

Sole And The Skyrider Band  headlines.   I have never had the chance to see Sole live so I am excited!  His release last year with the Skyrider Band was one of my favorites and if I had my top ten list to do again … oh man… OR if I had a 2007 top ten Conscious hip-hop list… it would be number one.  The production on it is sick and I have no idea what to expect from the live show.  Only good can come; the question is: “how much of face will remain unblown away?”
(UPDATE : Congrats to Josh who will be having a blast tonight at Emo's)

For a Pair of tickets to the show email PartyEnds@Gmail.com with Anticon in the subject line and I will let the random n know this evening.  Good luck!

happy thursdays- john

oh, you know it's on.  Remember Zom zoms? Pataphysics is the snarky oddball rocking rolling phoenix of them with crazy energy and even crazier lyrics.  Remember the 90's?  La Snacks does. They also love sweatpants- a major faux paus at the Beauty Bar but they might "go there" anyway.  Remember that scene on the roof of Clerks 2 where that girls teaches Dante how to dance?  Stay Gold does. That, and the guy throwing up talking about Lord of the Rings vs star Wars were the best parts.
See you Thursday night!

Friday night’s Mohawk show with Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black was the coldest I had been in a year.  With crazy Texas weather- MLK weekend marks the beginning of our short sleety winter. Surely at this point in the week it is almost over..

The Mohawk was as full as ever and as a result the line to get in looked like something right of sxsw.  Michael Showalter graciously started his set early in an effort to accommodate the cold Texans, a gesture especially appreciated by those still waiting in line who were able to have a sparkle of hope to help their toes from cracking off and being lost forever in a puddle of Doug the guy who says “I’m outta heeeere” anticipation.  This was true gentlemanly act. Top notch I tell you what.

Showalter’s set was a lot of back and forth with the audience and a lot of playing with his iTunes.  Creed is still funny.  Still.  A few inappropriate hip-hop dances and a few funny fake movie trailers later the set winded down with a brief overlap where he shared the stage with Michael Ian Black. The back and forth between the two was pretty amazing if nothing else just to see two alt-comedy legends together.

Black’s set was more of a “routine” with less banter with highlights including a bit about ejaculating wasabi and other non-pleasant substances and how to take away your friend’s masculinity.  One of my favorite elements of his set was closing essay “an Ode to Conversion Vans” I always enjoy his contributions to McSweeny’s so to hear his slightly effeminate voice aloud rather than in my head was a treat.

Those who stuck around for the PartyEnds.com After Show featuring Built By Snow and Terp 2 It were in for a full evening of entertainment.

Built By Snow debuted a few new pop gems and held a raffle to give out copies of their rad debut Noise.  The crowd tapped their frost bitten feet as the band churned thru songs about girls, radios and more girls.

Terp 2 It came out with his gi-normous wrestling championship belt in front of him, his gloriously strange projections behind him and his posse beside him who acted as Adrock and Mike D to his MCA.  Imagine 8-Mile happening live at a comic con and you have an idea of what Terp 2 It is like. There are a few more pictures HERE

mermaid blonde-john

Mermaid- Blonde is a concept band where a lanky guy in a captain’s uniform sings morose organ and guitars based tracks that sound like they are at least a few thousands leagues under the sea of muffled lo-finess. Add in some chopped and screwed dragging drums and you have an idea of the sound the band is going for. Pretty cool, right?  The response from the college house party scene has been good and now this Wednesday night you have the chance to catch them in all their nautical glory on the inside Mohawk stage.   Fans of the Lovely Sparrows, Follow that Bird and Goodnight, Fish will recognize most everyone on stage and be transfixed with how somber and seafaring music can be.  Keep an eye out for an EP at some point….. check out one of my favorite tracks below...

everything was closed at coney island- john

9/11 was lame but CLOVERFIELD WAS AWESEOME! The panic shown in Manhattan and the ashy people after the attack was done so well it felt just like watching the news from that day in 2001.  This is a much better commentary on the terror than any Spike Lee or Oliver Stone post 9/11 film. It shows it all straight up POV, with very little setup on the characters and absolutely ZERO set up on what is going on: no gobbledy gook about nuclear testing, no underwater advanced civilization sending up a warrior to take over the land, just a totally badass monster. Suspend your disbelief and go to your local movie theatre and check it out!

I could feasibly watch this movie a few times a week just to fully take in and cherish the glimpses of the monster.  God bless JJ Abrams for making the monster movie fun again. Lost starts in 10 days. Mark your calendar.

showalter cd giveaway! show tonight! -john

Tonight at the Mohawk is an amazing little comedy show featuring standup from Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black.  Both of these heads of the State have new solo albums out right now I have only heard Showalter’s Sandwiches and Cats and it is GREAT! In fact you can download it on iTunes HERE or enter to win a copy compliments of PartyEnds.com by entering our trivia contest!

Question: try to name a funnier movie than
Wet Hot American Summer.  Try it.
Email your answers to PartyEnds@Gmail.com and two winners will be chosen on Tuesday afternoon.

I am SO excited to witness Showalter’s comedy live!  Not because he is the MySpace comedian of the week, not because he's been blogging like crazy on his personal site where he's started a very interesting dialogue with Fred Thompson supporters nationwide… but because I have been wanting to be in the same room (or in front of an outdoor stage) with him since 1993.  I love how he spits while yelling at his son in the “race home” sketch.  I love how he combs his hair in the “hormones” sketch.  I love it all.  I cannot wait!

After their comedy extravaganza on the outside stage, don’t close that inside bar tab just yet! Stick around for the nerd rock of  Built By Snow followed by the nerd rap of Terp 2 It ! The after show is free if you are already there or 5 bucks otherwise.  Who knows….maybe you can rock out with 2/3rds of Stella!

Check out the Michael Showalter Showalter on College Humor HERE!  It’s pretty amazing.

Check out these Mp3s from the album that we posted back in October.  Read the post HERE!

Enjoy!

big sharks sharp swords- john

(a few more of my Dan Deacon pictures here)

Austin has a new group of folk who go to awesome shows, film them, and put them up online for the world to marvel at.  The AV geeks over at  Switchburn have been putting up three cameras worth of footage for some of the best of the best passing thru Austin for over a year now. The site is always great to check out if you had to skip an Emo’s show for a family function or if a restraining order kept you away from the Mohawk one weekend… Switchburn might have been there and might have just the high quality uncut video footage you need to rectify your unfortunate situation.

Their Dan Deacon footage  from Friday night’s show at Emo’s is a little dark but that is just the nature of a show by a man who control all of his lights from the same wobbley table that has his voice wah wah pedals and garbage can oscillators on it.  They do capture the insanity of the crowd with flying colors tho.  During the Crystal Cat the middle camera focuses on the trippy green skull and it is just as, if not more mesmerizing than seeing it in person. Check out the videos here:

wet hot american friday- john

Gee whiz- Friday is going to rule. The State was easily my favorite show for a long long time.  I admired most every actor and worshipped every single character they played.   Once i even accidently called one 911 one night doing my Barry and Levon  impersanation and the county sherriff came out to scold my dad.  It's a long story but that basically sums it up.  Like most of you- the Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter stand up show at the Mohawk this Friday night has been on the ol' calendar for a whille...and now we are proud to present a show that stands alone as great but in conjunction with the absurdist comedy of the stars of Stella, the Baxter, Wet Hot American Summer, the Ten and MORE- the show is "burgeriffic."

Built By Snow opens up with their unapologetic Weezer love letter songs that embrace the nerd in us all.  Their debut EP Noise was my top 10th favorite release of 07 and their energetic live shows make you feel like you are watching brand new Rentals songs played right before your very eyes!

Terp 2 It claims the ColdTowne set and his live show is not to be missed.  This multimedia nerd rap fest will shake the inside mohawk stage to it's core and have Doug- the guy who says "i'm out of heeeerre" and Capt. Monterray Jack cracking up. Stick around after the stand up and enjoy yourself. Here are some toonz to warm you up.....

free fader 7 inch -john

Fader/southern comfort has hooked us up with ANOTHER DOPE LOOKING 7inch from their ever-awesome spilt series.  This one features Dirty Projectors and White Williams as well as the coolest cover art yet (above) thanks to artist Matt Furie.  I really recommend checking this guy out- it is all a strange balance between disgusting, funny and hip . it reminds me of a lot of the monsters I drew in first grade only he gets pay checks from it. I love it.

If you want this 7 inch collectors item in your record collection just shoot an email to PartyEnds@gmail.com with “Fader” in the subject line and I will randomly select a winner on Friday afternoon.  Good luck!

You can read the new issue of the Fader HERE!

post weekend update- john

                                       (photo from recoviering lazyholic

This weekend was excellent.  It was full of movies, beer and pizza as per usual but was greatly improved upon by the presence of the great Wham City delegate Dan Deacon.  Crowds just don’t seem to care at other shows about going crazy as much as they do at DD shows.  Playing mostly new stuff Deacon commanded the crowd into a dance circle, a dance gauntlet and above all a dancing mob full of smiles, giggles and ironic t-shirts.  Read an EXCELLENT recap over at Covert Curiosity!

Sunday night’s Mohawk show had excellent performances by Denton’s ambassador of quirkiness Fishboy!  Their opening set was full of energy and the audience collectively marveled at how the simplest pop songs were transformed into complex aural treasures thanks largely in part to drummer John Mustafis who consistently found places for double bass pumps and cymbal quadruplets in between mega fast fills and overall technically proficiency.  Also, he had a pretty sweet mustache.  Fishboy churned thru several songs from their ridiculously titled concept album Albatross: How We Failed to Save the Lone Star State with the Power of Rock and Roll. Pick it up HERE.  I'll have pictures up soon...

Iowa’s Poison Control Center rocked it mid 90’s style with crazy energy and a great song about Texas cult hall of fame member David KoreshPeel finished off the night sans a member but still managed to play a great cover of the Kinks’ “I’m not like everybody else.”

So there you have it: another great music weekend.  Now I am counting down the minuets until Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter cruise thru the Mohawk this Friday night.  We are happy to present an after show on the inside stage of the Mohawk featuring some of our favorite local acts Built By Snow and Terp 2 It!  Many more details to come soon…. Stand by..

Have a good day.

the dodos- john

The Dodos may have a questionable name but their fast unshakable guitar strumming and catchy vocals more than compensate for it!  They are similar to locals Mothfight in a lot of ways in that they both a pop music grasp on that Animal Collective-y odd and rich texture genre.  The Dodos are recent signees to one of my favorite labels Frenchkiss Records (home of Les Savy Fav and Thunderbirds are Now!) The band is just two dudes from San Francisco who sound like 6 guys from Montréal as there are plenty of dynamics to go around listen after listen.  Their new single 'Fools' is near perfection.  And in just two months they will be all over the place at SXSW.  I can not wait for what I can only imagine is a ridonkulous live show.

Please download  “Fools” From The Dodo’s upcoming album Visiter. Really. Learn it.  Love it.  Live it.

a few of my favorite dan deacon things - john

Only one day until Dan Deacon, Ultimate Reality and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth at Emo’s! Our contest for tickets is complete (congratulations Matt and Snackface!) and now the fun part.  I am pleased to share some of the better poetic reasons why Austin area entrants love the Wham City ambassador of unusual-oscillated-pitch-shifted-Casio-sing-along-electro-rock: Dan Deacon! Thanks to everyone who entered and as always thank you for reading PartyEnds.com

fishpeelpoison - luther

Jan_13th_poster_450.jpg

Denton has brought us many excellent bands in the last few years, but few are as hard working and tallented as the laugh inducing, hook slinging Fishboy. Though not a regular fixture in Austin yet, Fishboy is destined for at the very least an everlasting cult following, and at the most utter global domination.

We are also pleased to bring you something even further away, Iowa to be exact, in the well matched Poison Control Center. Slacker rock in the tradition of Pavement, they deliver charmingly sloppy, catchy pop. Top the whole event off with local staples Peel and you have a solid evening of youthful, intelligent fun. More on this show as it comes up, but certainly not something to miss (and more MP3's as I track some down, too).

American Gladiators is all staged and scripted right? Surely the inclusion of so many clichés is some violation of the WGA strike… Right?

footloose and fancy free week- john

Thanks to EVERYONE who came out to our free week show Saturday night!  The place was packed and as expected broke out in a dance party that layered everything from the Chemical Brothers to White Denim.

La Snacks were in prime form.  Just drunk enough to churn thru songs from their debut Brown, Orange, Black, Gray and a few from their untitled upcoming release with a balance of inhibition and energy.  The crowd who was already sold on the performance alone had extra incentive to leave La Snacks fans for life with the generous offering of free t-shirts to anyone who wanted them.

The Bronze Age (formally Quiet, Lovely) was indie-tastic.  The group is QL reformed with the original drummer replaced and an additiontional keyboard/percussion player.  The drum circle break downs and the catchy choruses made the Bronze Age a great new band to watch even though so many have been following them as QL. With the name change I suppose they are eligible for Best New Band status in next year’s end of year lists.  Ha.

With half of Mothfight out of town, front man Kevin A. was joined by sampler queen and vocalist Jess Boettger and noisemaking multi instrumentalist Marcus Rubio on stage for a set without guitars, saws or drums.  The 3 had arranged for Animal Collective loopy versions of all their material that reinterpreted it in a way that if I didn’t know about the full version would have still blown me out of the water.  How those three made so much synchronized noise will always confuse me.  The grandeur is exceeded by the wicked case of the flu that Kevin was battling with all day long.  Seeing the man barely able to speak off stage but brashly sing the fast paced words to his songs on was a sight. And there was no vomiting on stage which was a plus.

Car Stereo (Wars) had Emo’s Lounge full crowd tightly packed onto the stage and the dance floor surrounding the stage with extroverted dancers who checked their shame at the door and came ready to drink and two step to big beats with ironic (?) acapella verses and choruses beat matched on top.  This was the best set of his I have ever seen and those there will back me up.

Keep on going out to Emo's Free Week! all the acts are listed HERE! Tonight catch Many Birthdays and Single Frame!

ocean of noise- john

Quick update to tomorrow night’s big Emo’s free week show:
Mothfight is not all in town due to the residue of crazy holiday schedules so taking the stage on their behalf is just front man Kevin A. shown above rocking a house party (more photos on the partyends' flickr here). Kevin has previously backed Single Frame and the Octopus Project but is finally in the control seat with Mothfight where he orchestrates the yelps, noise loops, and belts out the literary lyrics that pilot the band of keyboards, saws, violins and heavy duty percussion.

Also- in keeping with yesterday’s congratulations- I have to give a shout out to the modest men of White Denim who rocked the Pitchfork main page nestled in between American Apparel ads most of yesterday.  Pretty neato.  Check out the link HERE.

Finally- in addition to going to Emo’s  to catch out free week show (!!!) don’t forget to enter to wind free Dan Deacon tickets for his Emo’s show on Jan 11th! All you have to do is shoot an email over to PartyEnds@Gmail.com with a reason that you love Dan Deacon. A winner will be chosen at random and some of the better responses will be posted on the site….

Congratulations to friend to PartyEnds Annie Ray for her surprising cover story in today’s edition of the Austin American Stateman “XL.” Read it here. Check out Annie's photos from our ManFest event at Birds Barbershop HERE!!

Congratulations to PartyEnds favorites  Matt Besser and Tim Medows for their amazing roles in Walk Hard: the Story of Dewy Cox.  I saw it last night and was screaming with high-pitched girlish laughter and holding back high-pitched girlish tears at the end.

Congratulations to anyone who take my advice and goes and buys Love is a Mixtape by Rob Sheffield.  Easily one the best reads of 2007. In a few years students at liberal universities will be studying this  line for line. This was the perfect indie rock lit pallet cleanser after the horrible and misleading titled Perfect From Now On- never read that- but do read Love is a Mixtape.

Congratulations to you for making it thru yet another year of our Larry the Cable Guy culture and reading PartyEnds.com every single weekday. As a reward we are happy to announce the giving away of a pair of tickets for the upcoming DAN DEACON show at Emo’s! Mark your calendar for January 11th 2008 at Emo’s for an EPIC show featuring local screamers When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, a Deacon curatted video featuring nothing but Arnold Schwarzenegger psychedelic footage, three sound systems and Deacon and a partner performer a Wham City opus. Doesn't make sense on the computer screen- you have to see it in person!  The place will be crammed and this show will sell out. No question.
Write your favorite thing about Dan Deacon to PartyEnds@Gmail.com and a winner will be randomly chosen and some of the better answers will be published on the site!  Enter by Tuesday the 8th! Get on it and early congratulations to the future winner!!! Check out my pictures of the last Austin Dan Deacon show HERE!
