to the death - luther (dallas,tx)
Denton is a magical land that seems to be almost entirely separated from the very essence of both of it's larger sister cities Dallas and Fort Worth. One of the most magical things about this little college town is it's music scene, sprung from the eclectic youth culture and stellar music classes at it's local institution, that is of late competing on a national level in a number of diverse genres. One of the long time shining stars and waver of the freak flag of little D (which is, of course, the name of his last album) is the mighty and brave Fishboy.
We've talked about our love of his They Might Be Giants-esqu (though by no means derivative), comically charged, borderline nonsensical pop music in the past, and it has only grown stronger with each passing listen. With the recent vogue of artist like Dan Deacon and Suburban Kids with Biblical Names this is a good time for artist like Fishboy who operate outside of the realms of a traditional cool, eschewing the ingrained stuffy ponch of the music industry for just having a fuckin' good time with their music, and enjoying a few laughs in the process. And so enters Albatross: How We Failed to Save the Lone Star State With the Power of Rock and Roll, the upcoming, seemingly concept epic from Fishboy and his rag-tag gang. As rampant and enjoyable as any of his previous material, the long name only tells a tiny part of this record's story. I don't know much solid info about this eminent release other than it's supposed to come out in 'fall' of 2007 on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records / Business Deal and that the songs you'll find below are awesome.

I also know for a fact that this coming Saturday, Fishboy will be going up against co-Denton-wunderkinds the Undoing of David Wright in a musical, or otherwise, 'fight to the death'. The evening's festivities will include, but will not be limited to: "weapons" for the audience, set changes, and special guest stars for each side. This show also claims that it "will most likely be the most elaborate show either band has ever performed", which is a big task for two such accomplished and elaborate groups. not to be missed.
