rachael can too - luther (dallas,tx)

Sometimes you just stumble onto the best things, wacky ol' Myspace. Anyway, girl fronted indie-pop can get real generic, real fast (well, scratch 'girl fronted', it all can), so it's nice to hear something that blends elements like classic late-90's fem-centric indie songs, clean electronic elements, and acoustic guitar drive into something even somewhat fresh.
That's what helps to set Rachael Cantu apart from other 'indie' acts still holding the singer-songwriter torch high and dry as we all fall victim to the comings and goings of hot dance songs and sulky folkways. It's not some knockoff Scout Niblet droning through overdriven head bobbers, these songs are diverse, ranging from hand clap stompers (Your Hips are Bad) to low key balladry (Blood Laughs), and hold their own through the lo-fi charm and sometime home-brew recording. Cantu is no stranger to her influences, having recorded with legends (well, in my book anyway) like Kori Gardner of Mates of State, and Jason Gnewikow of The Promise Ring, and played shows with the likes of other classics The Getup Kids and Ben Lee.
