itchy, warm and scratchy - john (austin,tx)
<FADE IN>:
Abrupt medium close-up of Alvy Singer doing a comedy monologue. He is wearing a crumbled sports jacket and tieless shirt; the background is stark.
ALVY:
"There's an old joke. Uh, two elderly women are at a Catskills mountain resort, and one of 'em says: "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible."
The other one says, "Yeah, I know, and such ... small portions."
Woody Allen’s opening of Annie Hall is similar to how I feel about the free albums that Adult Swim puts out, more or less- only instead of the “such small portions” I am pleased with the freeness… and that’s about it. Even tho it is free I still don’t really care.

I bought the DangerMouse album on vinyl and listen to that now and then, and I downloaded Chrome Children, Chocolate Swim, Definitive Swim and now Warm and Scratchy- their venture into “indie rock.” I love that Adult Swim is just going for it and getting their name out there by making tracks from buzzed about artists available and therefore getting some of the buzz projected onto themselves as a network- but album to album just doesn’t really hold up for multiple listens. They seem to serve as devices to make me say- “How about that Cartoon Network- they are so different. The Food Channel doesn’t give out free songs! I bet Rachel ray doesn’t even know who the Rapture is!”
It's FANTASTIC MARKETING. Don’t get me wrong. I am just not a fan of the latest export in particular. Now, speaking of brilliant marketing- I can’t stop playing FIVE MINUTES TO KILL YOURSELF!
It’s dark, it's twisted and it's funnier than any silly Easter Egg type thing I have ever run across in the three Grand Theft Auto games that consumed roughly a few calendar years of my life. You can urinate on faulty computers and get shocked, you can have your zombie like co-workers beat you like a piñata, you can get attacked by a giant shark. It’s amazing. Play FIVE MINUTES TO KILL YOURSELF!. Bible Fight is fun too- but gets old quick… and one more brilliant marketing ploy: terrorizing Boston with Moonite bombs.
