oh, hail nah! - luther (dallas,tx)
So, I'd like to say that last night was the craziest Monday I've seen in Dallas since I moved here; between the Polyphonic Spree party at Good Records (overflowing with bubbly tweens and 30 something), the as always excellent Astronautalis show in the downstairs at the cavern, and the Chromeo listening party upstares, there was no shortage of fun or booze. I spent most of the evening at the listening party with sets by locals Schwa and Big J, both getting the room movin' with some hot shit. It was a good Monday.
I was crushed when I talked to Andy (Astro) about the show that I missed in Denton night before last and he called it "one of the top five shows he has ever done", including "two encores" and one of the only times he has allowed himself to "really drink" during a show (if your familiar with his usual performance, it involves no disrespectable amount of alchohol itself). By the end he couldn't remember the words to his longtime classic Gaston Ave. I'm kicking myslef right now.

Anyway, for your listening pleasure today I thought I'd pull out an older track that I've been into lately by a band who is making some big waves at the moment by the name of Holy Hail. That may be the awesomest name ever as it not only calls to mind the aestetic of divine judegment and apocaliptic terror, but it's also a light hearted southern tinged explative. Dance rock, new wave, whatever, these kids know how to balance cute, dark, and fun in ways that make you only want more.
At first listen I was struck by how much they reminded me of New Young Pony Club, which was cool, then I saw that they toured together, which made it a little less cool, but now I can see how their core demographic would be very, very similar, so I guess it's a smart move and I'll let it slide. With thier electro-coustic instramentation and girl fronted, snotty / cutesy vocals they conjure visions of a sexed up update to the B52's for a much more ironic crowd. With a not so distant full length followup to their digital or 12" only US single, I would'nt let these kids stray too far into your periferals. Check this out.
