men on a transmission- john (austin,tx)
The Austin American-Statesman Business section actually reported something that peaked my interest last week. As Red River flagship club Emo’s celebrates it’s 15th anniversary of slinging Lonestars while the nation’s best underground and independent acts play their hearts out on three (and during SXSW, four!) stages, their national talent buyer of 10 years Graham Williams is leaving to begin his own venture with some of the greats of the Austin music scene. Along with high-ups from Club Deville, the Mohawk and SUPER!ALRIGHT!, a new company called Transmission Entertainment will be formed that will be book all up and down Austin a la California’s Goldenvoice. Starting with 10 different venues with different sizes and personalities- Transmission Entertainment will be able to host the biggest national stuff at one venue and have the up and coming locals right down the street at another. This is an ultra exciting thing for Austin music… and for Austin video!
The incorporation of S!A! into something like this is going to change EVERYTHING. Expect these guys to all be giving lectures on how to put on the best show ever at SXSW and CMJ before too long. We are seeing phones with cameras and MP3 players in them so it is a matter of time before it is unusual NOT to have some sort of digital component along with most live music. SUPER!ALRIGHT! and Transmission Entertainment are blazing the trail. Watch out.
For Graham Williams and the rest of Transmission Entertainment, the sky is the limit- not just the outside Emo’s capacity and sound. Speaking of Emo’s outside sound, the Battles show blew a fuse on Sunday night leaving fans to scream along the chipmunk vocals of Atlas while the drums with the 10 foot crash cymbal stand played on. Also, two Wednesdays ago Ghostland Observatory just bypassed all potential problems and brought their very own mega sound system!
