purple reign- john (austin,tx)

The elements are all just right.  DJs Jazz One  and Orion  just knocked Draft Sessions into a mixed and mashed overdose on Saturday and Prince just found a way to bottle  and make even more money off his uber sexiness.

The common man like you and I weren’t invited to that super secret Prince Ballroom show he did at some Austin hotel a few weeks ago (I heard some rich dude paid him like $200,000 for a 30 min set!) The common man like you and I are still replaying the awesomeness of the super bowl halftime show where he played purple rain IN ACTUAL RAIN!

Well, common men and women unite!  Friday night at ELYSIUM these two DJS bring a healthy serving of Prince on four turntables! These guys will be playing nothing but Prince originals, mash ups, remixes, covers and favorites!  Five dollars at the door and brang your purple!

This weekend is chock full of pretty cool stuff to do, but I believe that the opening at Dallas's And/Or Gallery might warrant a bit of your attention. The latest opening will feature sculptures by local artist Lily Hanson and Brooklyn's Jason Singleton and will be scored with a performance by local buzzers Mom, who apparently put on quite the live show. The opening runs from 6pm to 9pm, so there is plenty of time afterward to get your drink on and freekdance, or whatever you kids do these days, as long as it's ironic I'm down. Get with it.

noche de vuelo - luther (dallas,tx)

The weekend is almost upon us and it's time to hunt for some hot shit to heat up the dance floor, whether it be down ol' Greenville way or in your living-room in your underwear (we're cool too, I swear). So here is a choice lineup for you by somewhat of a Dallas newcomer, Killtronix. Keeping it interesting with new jams like Justice and classics like N.W.A, Noche De Vuelo should keep things rolling for at least it's 23 tracks and would be complimented by some mixed drinks, swoopy bang, and maybe some high heels. Get this pumpin' and continue reading below for the track list.

but, i could giveaway that- john (austin,tx)

Cari Palazzolo is a total rock star; a completely and utterly busy rock star. She has finalized the new release from Austin dream poppers Belaire (exploding, impacting release show at Emo’s on Friday July 6th y'all!) and she rocks clubs and house parties full of sweaty art schoolers solo under the moniker Fancy Feast . She has also already done one run of a musical with the Yellow Tape Construction Co late last year called We Are Normal Cha Cha Chaaa which I wrote about sadly missing here the shame still haunts me like that infamous "drifter incident" that my probation officer advised me not to talk about…

Well, now she has another project that has been incubating for a while and is finally seeing the light of day at the Off Center (2211-a Hidalgo St) entitled But, I Could Do That. All of the music in the dance performance will be original pieces from Cari, a girl who turns everything she touches into energetic, bouncy, lovable music. Just like how Jay-Z gets brought in to songs to make them banging and have street cred- this is what Cari (Cari-P?) does for shit. If you hear she’s involved in something – take notice.

So what is the show exactly?- No idea. But like I said- it’s going to be good. I heard Cari talk about it on Ear Candy on Saturday, and she said that it will feature reworked Belaire and Fancy Feast songs in addition to originals. Will it be avant-garde annoying ballet that exists to annoy you and it turns out that that is the art? Will it be like Gallagher and the audience will have to wear rain slickers to shield themselves from the watermelon debris? I don’t know! Jonathon Morgan, one of Yellow Tape's Artistic Directors, claims: "I've been sworn to secrecy on the show's content, but I hear rumors about aliens, Chinese phone tag, and Marky Mark."  Boom- I am sold.  The show’s title implies that after it is all said and done folks walking out to the parking lot will say- “but I could do that” and maybe that is just what we need: More Cari Palazzolos to make the world a better place full of more girls rapping over lo fi hip hop synth pop! And more independent theatres making unique, quirky and different things for us to enjoy!

But I Could Do That runs June 28, 29, and 30 at 8pm, and July 1 at 2pm at the Off Center. More information at yellowtape.org

I am happy to announce that we are giving away a FREE pair of tickets to the show for Friday night!  To enter please email PartyEnds@gmail.com with But I Could Do That in the subject line. The winner will be chosen randomly and notified promptly. Cheers and good luck!

Is it too late to talk about Dan Deacon again? Yeah, we’ve been doing it since SXSW when he played our day show, and with his recent American tour marked by Pitchfork drool, andeBay hypercolor shirts- he’s been getting plenty of attention huh? Hmmm…

Oh! Oh! I’ll tell you what hasn’t been getting the proper praise though- tour mates Video Hippos!  If Deacon shacked up with my boys in Japanther the Video Hippos would emerge from the boisterous megaphone womb as a neon glasses wearing band baby who was tragically addicted to Supercool.

Utilizing fuzzy treble and unrelenting drums, Video Hippos make their debut album Unbeast the Leash (get it – it’s a play on words just like Deacon’s Spiderman of the Rings- oh B-more- you so crazzzzy) totally fun.

Projections of fucked up cartoons and home movies that would give Bob Saget an epileptic seizure round out the band's live performance. Video Hippos take the punk aesthetic of not caring how it sounds or if you can understand the words and add Nintendo loops and Battles-esq chipmunk vocals to ultimately create a rich and animated album.

independence lense - john (austin,tx)

Hey there, I just wanted to drop by real fast today and let everyone know that our great pal Mitchell over at OutWithMe.com has put up his dope photos from the Party Ends presented Draft Sessions the other night and they are somein' else. Please head over there and take a look for yourselves- and while you're at it, do yoursleves a favor and have a look around the rest of the site too. Seriously.

men on a transmission- john (austin,tx)

The Austin American-Statesman Business section actually reported something that peaked my interest last week. As Red River flagship club Emo’s celebrates it’s 15th anniversary of slinging Lonestars while the nation’s best underground and independent acts play their hearts out on three (and during SXSW, four!) stages, their national talent buyer of 10 years Graham Williams is leaving to begin his own venture with some of the greats of the Austin music scene. Along with high-ups from Club Deville, the Mohawk and SUPER!ALRIGHT!, a new company called Transmission Entertainment will be formed that will be book all up and down Austin a la California’s Goldenvoice. Starting with 10 different venues with different sizes and personalities- Transmission Entertainment will be able to host the biggest national stuff at one venue and have the up and coming locals right down the street at another. This is an ultra exciting thing for Austin music… and for Austin video!

The incorporation of S!A! into something like this is going to change EVERYTHING. Expect these guys to all be giving lectures on how to put on the best show ever at SXSW and CMJ before too long. We are seeing phones with cameras and MP3 players in them so it is a matter of time before it is unusual NOT to have some sort of digital component along with most live music. SUPER!ALRIGHT! and Transmission Entertainment are blazing the trail. Watch out.

For Graham Williams and the rest of Transmission Entertainment, the sky is the limit- not just the outside Emo’s capacity and sound. Speaking of Emo’s outside sound, the Battles show blew a fuse on Sunday night leaving fans to scream along the chipmunk vocals of Atlas while the drums with the 10 foot crash cymbal stand played on. Also, two Wednesdays ago Ghostland Observatory just bypassed all potential problems and brought their very own mega sound system!

professor jape - luther (dallas,tx)

(Jape is the dude at the bottom, I have no idea who the scary guy with the cat and the Jesus eyes is)

Every once in a while someone comes along and takes a musical medium that everyone is more than familiar with and twists it all around in some mysterious and magical way to mould something new and exciting. The way that Britt Daniel turned guitar rock on it's ear without even really changing the formula, so Jape has taken a well worn sound and made something that surprises at every turn.

Though some of his derivatives are clear from the first note, most obvious to myself being that both his guitar and vocal stylings are pleasantly similar to the latter work of one Mr. Stephen Malkmus, he weaves a web of natural, rhythmic folk with a modern and stylish often electronic edge that is at once his and his alone. The track I've sat with the most, Floating, is a charming mix of the oh-so-hip Native American aesthetic and lazy attitude-driven vocals pulsing under a catchy acoustic guitar riff. By the time the weirdo-overdrive bass comes in for it's one note solo, you'll be sold on not only Richie Jape's talent, but also his artistic potential. After listening to his floppy, casual singing, you'll also probably marvel over the fact that this young man is actually from Dublin Ireland and speaks with the accent accordingly.

This is one to watch, without so much as an official EP out but still opening for the likes of Super Fury Animals, Bell X1, and the Rapture, I expect we can look forward to great things.

MP3: Jape- Floating

And this would appear to be just a little instrumental electronic song that he put together, probably at a conference, but check out the Myspace for more great tunes:

I have really been enjoying watching SoundCheck Magazine get better and better. If you dig through the magazines in my bathroom- chronologically the SoundChecks just keep getting more interesting. They have won me back over from the time they listed Ben Folds Five coming to town; mocking me with ignorance hurts- it really does.  But they have redeemed themselves.

Reasons the rag is solid:

  • It’s local as fuck.
  • They were the FIRST to slap Voxtrot on the cover in the recent Voxtrot-mania of 07' and then the Austin Chronicle, Austin Music Magazine and XLent followed.
  • Each and every photo in each issue is amazing. The shoots they do with bands are innovative and fun and their concert shots kick me in the face with their skill.
  • They are about to host a great fucking lineup at outside Emo’s full of some of my favorite, ultra-fun live bands!

This Friday the 29th- come check out 6 bands at Emo’s for the SoundCheck Summer Showcase!  Sure, the all-powerful Octopus Project headlines shows in Austin every 2 months or so but I haven’t seen them matched up with such a good bill in forever!  Clap!Clap! is still promoting their mega release You Love This and still making audiences from San Marcos to Austin clap uncontrollably. Read our review of the freshness here.

Peachcake is never to be missed. These guys are practically the flagship export of all the crazy good electronic music coming from the young lions in Arizona. The other good Austin bands seem like obvious choices if you are putting together a huge show like this- but SoundCheck, I have to hand it to you, the booking of Peachcake- good call. Good call indeed. Read of our admiration of Peachcake here.

draft expressions – john (austin,tx)

(all photo creds: recovering lazyholic)

Thank you to everyone who came out to Draft Sessions on Saturday night! What a pleasure to share an improv experiment of local rap and local grubby electro jungle rock with a brewery full of people.

I am always pleased with the brave Austinites who venture off the beaten path of Red River and have themselves a time in the REAL warehouse district of Austin- the kind with actual packing and shipping warehouses- not just the kind with expensive restaurants and gay bars. Draft Sessions is built around the fundamental idea that people like to see music in an unconventional environment so we are continually thrilled that you show up and prove the theory correct!

Storm Shadow  and his hype man got the crowd excited about being from the “ATX” and made onlookers ecstatic when they weaved in and out of the crowd rapping and doing the Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff secret handshake. Franco B  brought the energy and the raw lyrics in his prerecorded tracks but shone the most in the freestyle portions of the evening. Franco B came across as a hybrid of a less angry Zach De La Rocha  and a less pony-tailed Arron from Ghostland Observatory.  Obviously the results were interesting. DJ Orion- pictured above- spit (pardon my lameness) mad fire all over the place. Orion is the main man behind Raw Word Records, his commitment to local hip hop is inspiring.

The Laughing's new material has graduated from white tiger themed concept rock to something much more dissent, aggressive and as as Recovering Lazy-holic called it- “smutty.”

Ultimately- even tho there was no break dancing, everyone was impressed at the musicianship of all involved and due to the complimentary Independence beer, a legendary time was had!

See you at the next Draft Sessions!  check out more pictures from the night here

sunday scene - luther (dallas,tx)

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I hope you're recovering from last night's 4th Draft Sessions along with the rest of the Austin kids who know what's up. I only wish I could have been there to see the Laughing not only tear it up with their own music, but improvise beats and songs for the likes of local lyrical sages Storm Shadow, Franco B, and CO2. A big thanks to any and everyone who was involved in getting the whole things off the ground for yet another successful flight including, but not limited to, Independence themselves, Raw Word Records, and, of course the bands. We love this shit.

So it's time for some stuff to watch and I thought, as it's just now officially Summer, with that oh so official solstice and whatnot, that I would pull out some movies that I'm excited about seeing in the near future. Our hot days certainly lend themselves to enjoying a nice long sit in a freezing movie theater. Having already been treated to some of the years (and history's) biggest blockbusters, all those III's, these are some films with the potential to be just as great, but possibly less profitable.

All I have to say is- 'Fuck yeah'. If you don't like this shit, then there is something wrong with you. You by no means have had to have read any of the books to enjoy what has really been a stellar series of increasingly adult, but still enjoyably light hearted films (though I would suggest the books to no end as well, I guarantee you'll be surprised). I hadn't seen this new trailer till today, and it looks way better than I imagined they would have handled it. They always get the strangest directors for each film, and this one is no exception with former movie credits with names like Sex Traffic and Rank.

And if your a really big dork like me, there is stuff like this too:

Video: HPAOP- ABC Special

"Who doesn't love you? Your George Michael!" Yeah, Arrested Development isn't on the air anymore, and though it's probably good that they wrapped it up before the possibility of making an episode that wasn't the best comedy on American TV possibly ever, we still miss it. At least some of the actors are going on to do some pretty great stuff, though, including little George Michael (Michael Cera). This new movie Superbad also includes another young comedian, Jonah Hill, who is great, as well as recently much more famous than when he was "that awesome guy from Freaks and Geeks", Seth Rogan. Oh, and don't forget to check out Michael's band.

Oh yeah, and this internet TV show is pretty good too:

Video: Clark and Michael

And this isn't really a movie that's coming out any time soon, it's supposed to start shooting in 2008, I just found this cobbled together 'movie poster' of some of the actors leading the fan polls to play the leads in the Watchmen movie that is still on pre-pre-production. I'm down with, like, half of the choices. As much as I like most of the actors, I'm not a fan of Ed Harris as Dr Manhatten (though he'd be about a billion times better than the IMDB rumored casting of Keanu Reeves) or Raiph Fiennes as Ozymandias (IMDB's rumored Jude Law would actually be pretty good as this character, though hes much too young for it). Also, if they announce M. Night Shamalabamba as the director, I will kill him in his sleep before he can start shooting the film. This could go so wrong in so many ways (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Daredevil), I don't even really like to think about it, but if it's done right (V for Vendetta, X-Men) then this could be one of the best movies of the decade.

So this was really just kind of an article about how big a dork I am. Sorry.

the laughing vs rappers- john (austin, tx)

Come on out and witness Austin music history- like if Stevie Ray Vaughn played with the Gheto Boys! Too extreme? Ok, how about come out this Saturday for an amazingly innovative and unique time- the likes of which Austin has not seen before! Come see the Laughing  play a set then provide all new material for some of Austin’s best rappers to freestyle over. Now, wait one gosh darn second- stop thinking about Run DMC and Aerosmith- stop thinking about (gasp) Jay-Z and Linkin Park- this is going to be GOOD. So- sagging pants B-boy/girls and tight pants hipsters unite for an evening of reasonable pant sizes and have a Freestyle Wheat Beer  while watching some amazing freestyles!

This is perhaps the most innovative Draft Sessions yet. We always come correct with the concert series held at the Independence Brewery that we work ever so hard on- pairing great Austin acts together with tons of beer and a cheap suggested donation for essentially what is an awesome warehouse party.

This is the Laughing like you have never seen them before. Gone are the white tiger themed outfits, they have been replaced with ironic polo shirts and face paint among other things. Gone is the fourth member and the remaining three have taken on more instrument tasks that sound surprisingly good. As for song subject matter- I have no idea what the new stuff is about yet- I will be listening closely this Saturday night though.

Storm Shadow  was kind enough to play our Friday Fiasco SXSW day shows and made quite an impression.  He and his hype men will be GREAT to see in front of a live band. I hear nothing but good things about Franco B and CO 2. These acts will fill the brewery with reverberations of improvised complete rawness. A huge thanks goes out to DJ Orion over at Raw Word Records for assembling such a trill lineup of MC's from Austin's busting scene.

This is not a show to miss. Five buck suggested donation for the performers and free local Independence beer.  See you there!

For those in the know about Austin, there is only one place to get the best photos of all the cool-ass happenings around town, from parties to shows to any event you can think of or might attend, and that is Outwithme.com. We were lucky enough to have our friend Mitchell take some great photos of our show last week with Til' We're Blue or Destroy, Astronautalis, Magic Surprise and Markus with a K, so please head on over to his site and check them out. Take a look around the rest of the place too, you never know what you might see. You can see the photos from our event here.

g.h.o.s.t. - luther (dallas,tx)

Man, I gave it a little time, but I have to post this new music video from Denton's Ghosthustler. According to our dear freinds at We Shot JR this shit was all over Pitchfork yesterday, and for good reason. There I am thinking "This song is really cool, but they probably don't have enough money to make a really descent music video; maybe some abstract, pretentious student film with music over it, if we're lucky." Holy Gees was I wrong, the video for my favorite of their songs, Parkinglot Nights, gives the impression of a video cassette from the 80's you found in the garage while you were doing some spring cleaning and popped it in the old VCR only to find your favorite movie from your youth. Not quite as good as Howard the Duck or Garbage Pail Kids, but you get the idea. More important than the look is the fact that it shows that the members of the band don't take themselves too seriously, which could have impacted the music in horrible ways if they did.

Following a power glove on a comic, Punch-Out!, nighttime rampage, the video not only flaunts 8-bit hardware like the classic power mat, it also features the band performing through a wood chip TV, a break dancer, and even a parking lot at night! Please don't be annoyed by the lead singers resemblance to that guy from Entourage.

******************************************************

Also check out the new We Shot a Mix, the series of local celebrity bands and Dj's putting together hot summer dance mixes. This one is also by Ghosthustler and looks to be pretty damn good.

reginaxxx - luther (dallas,tx)

So, I pretty much always wish I was a little more intercontinental, maybe I traveled more, maybe I spoke another language, whatever; but I've never really been all that into music in other languages. I mean, I love me some Stereolab and who doesn’t enjoy Sigur Ros, but I always want to know what's going on in a song, I think it's the same reason I'm so bad at listening to jazz- as much as I appreciate it and understand why other people love it, maybe I'm just too lazy to bother finding meaning that isn't shoved in my face, or preferably dangled in my vicinity on the spindly arms of some subdued lyrical prose. And that's why foreign dance music is so perfect, French, Japanese, funk carioca, it all makes you move (and a cute girls voice singing the other langueges helps when it's available too)!

Enter Regina, not the most original name, but in their native Helsinki maybe it's the cleverest thing on the block. That aside, the Finnish girl vox over synthesizers and phat beats give this Euro dance pop an airy, almost mysterious vibe and transcends other such groups from other such foreign lands. You have to love a band who use their best mastering of the English language to list one of their influences as "great powers". This three piece, who seem to only play around Helsinki at the moment, has recently put out a new single, Oi miten suuria voimia! on Next Big Thing, which is as yet my favorite song by them. Here is the video and their earlier single:

oh, hail nah! - luther (dallas,tx)

So, I'd like to say that last night was the craziest Monday I've seen in Dallas since I moved here; between the Polyphonic Spree party at Good Records (overflowing with bubbly tweens and 30 something), the as always excellent Astronautalis show in the downstairs at the cavern, and the Chromeo listening party upstares, there was no shortage of fun or booze. I spent most of the evening at the listening party with sets by locals Schwa and Big J, both getting the room movin' with some hot shit. It was a good Monday.

I was crushed when I talked to Andy (Astro) about the show that I missed in Denton night before last and he called it "one of the top five shows he has ever done", including "two encores" and one of the only times he has allowed himself to "really drink" during a show (if your familiar with his usual performance, it involves no disrespectable amount of alchohol itself). By the end he couldn't remember the words to his longtime classic Gaston Ave. I'm kicking myslef right now.

***************************************************

Anyway, for your listening pleasure today I thought I'd pull out an older track that I've been into lately by a band who is making some big waves at the moment by the name of Holy Hail. That may be the awesomest name ever as it not only calls to mind the aestetic of divine judegment and apocaliptic terror, but it's also a light hearted southern tinged explative. Dance rock, new wave, whatever, these kids know how to balance cute, dark, and fun in ways that make you only want more.

At first listen I was struck by how much they reminded me of New Young Pony Club, which was cool, then I saw that they toured together, which made it a little less cool, but now I can see how their core demographic would be very, very similar, so I guess it's a smart move and I'll let it slide. With thier electro-coustic instramentation and girl fronted, snotty / cutesy vocals they conjure visions of a sexed up update to the B52's for a much more ironic crowd. With a not so distant full length followup to their digital or 12" only US single, I would'nt let these kids stray too far into your periferals. Check this out.

Dear ACL- john (austin,tx)

Dear Austin City Limits,
Congratulations on getting this year’s schedule up today .  Way to once again know what you guys are doing.  I think that it’s great that you pit LCD Soundsystem against M.I.A. at 5:30 on Friday.  You always have such a talent for identifying the audience’s needs and meeting them.

Sincercerly,

ancient astronaught theory - luther (dallas,tx)

If you're lame like me, you didn't go see what I'm sure was a great show out Denton way last night including the likes of the smartest kid in the universe Astronautalis as well as some local coolness by the name of Ghosthustler; it was like a mini festival. Anyway, I couldn't go, but tonight I (and you) have a chance to set things right by going to see Astronautalis at the Cavern over on Greenville. So pack it up, pack it in, and plan on some Lonestars and Freestyles tonight.

Plus, we would like to say thanks once again to everyone involved in our shindig the other night at the Mohawk for making it such a success, and would also like to invite all of our readers to check out a rundown of the evening over at one of our favorite local Austin blogs Recovering Lazyholic, run by our friend Erin, along with her incredible photos of the night's blissful craziness. Top notch scenes of Til' We're Blue or Destroy, Astronautalis, Magic Surprise, and Markus with a K, in all their Flickr-y glory. Check it out, yo.

The new Say Hey Records release Fort Nightly by the White Rabbits is scientifically great.  It has the drunk chorus sing-alongs that kick off the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah debut, it has the Arcade Fire’s instrumentation, and the harmonies and speed that epitomize most everything I like in the wishywashy genre of “indie” rock. The White Rabbits debut has busted onto the college music charts with assertion and has made critics nationwide take notice- because systematically all the elements have been tested and tested in other bands. White Rabbits cobble together all the good stuff from all the good bands and then do wonders with their indie pop Frankenstein of gigantic marvelous sound. Layer upon layer of sound makes each song listenable over and over again. Full of grand energetic 3-part harmony filled songwriting; each toon stands alone as a great piece to an even greater album.

I missed them at SXSW but in my mind live- they are comparable to Austin’s Til We’re Blue or Destroy who headlined our amazing little night at the Mohawk last Thursday. Both acts have the piano parts, the obvious friendship and enjoyment of the music being played, and the polyvocal parts that can bring the house down with their immensity. White Rabbits do all the good things that everyone else does, only better, and it is awesome. Check them out on Myspace. Looks like they are about to make the rounds on an overseas tour - so get on the ball all you birds and blokes across the pond.

sunday scene - luther (dallas,tx)

It seems like, around Dallas anyway, the rain tries it's best to hold out until Sunday, and then just let's it all go for what seems like hours, like when you finally find that elusive 711 on your way through west Texas. Today is no exception, as it's been pouring outside all morning. It's been a long, hard, and fun weekend here at Party Ends, but not so much on the web site. My wife and I were in Austin on Thursday getting an apartment, and we stayed through the evening to attend the Party Ends and Mohawk presented show of Til' We're Blue or Destroy, Astronautalis, Magic Surprise, and Markus with a K, all of whom tore the place up in front of a tremendous crowd as John and I enjoyed some Highlife 32's, sat back and enjoyed the music. The turnout was spectacular, the bar tenders were prompt, and the whole evening was magical, despite some rain problems for Markus, and I would personally like to say thank you (X about 15 billion) to everyone involved in helping us get that show together and going, and very especially to the artists for giving it their all.

And so, here you are, some pointless things to while away your Sunday afternoon. I haven't really had time to peruse the internet much this week, so I'm cobbling this together this morning, hopefully it will be topical and pertinent. Oh, and stupid, did I mention stupid?:

We talked about the Cribs a while back; catching the (potential) tail end of the guitar dance craze kicked off so long ago by Franz Ferdinand and Hot Hot Heat, these dudes make some respectably solid sound, catchy, snarky, and just boring / bored enough to be hip. I've actually spent the last couple of days with their first single, Men's Needs stuck in my head like a mutha' fucka', and so I will attempt to exercises my daemons by showing you the uncensored video for their single. What's better on Sunday then watching a cute girl dance around nekid' in a cheap music video? Seriously:

To be honest, until she puts out another actual album, I'm getting a little lazy with following M.I.A. around right now. That song with Timbaland kind of blew and I'm ready for something a little more catchy than Birdflu. Will this be the one? Lets take a look:

Video: M.I.A- Boyz

These are the kids I was Friends with in high school, only with talent. These kids are more punk rock than you'll ever be: on a street corner, using the instruments they can, playing a song they like because they like it, for a bunch of people who are ignoring them. And naming themselves after the title of the most famous Wallace and Grommet video? Awesome, and way less embarrassing to watch than you expect it to be:

Video: The Wrong Trousers- Video Killed the Radio Star

Well, since this year's SXSW, when one Mr. Dan Deacon melted our faces off with super-dork awesomeness at our Friday Fiasco day party, we have been loyal disciples of his weirdness. Since his recent release of the full length, Spider Man of the Rings, so have many others, and our brothers in arms over at We Shot JR are no exception. As a matter of fact, in preparation for Deacon's show this last weekend (which I sadly missed, out of town, you know) the good fellows over there published an incredible interview with the musician that covers the spirit and technicals of his music in equal measure. I highly suggest this, so go check it out:

We Shot JR- Questions with Dan Deacon

It's summer, which sucks in Texas, but the sizzling days to come mean some very pleasant nights ripe for BBQs and dance parties, and so we will need to start hoarding good tracks early. Here is a little offering from me into the mashup category, smooshing together PE fave Spank Rock's Coke and Wet with samples from Beck songs including Loser, Emergency Exit, Debra, High Five (Rock the Catskills), and Deadweight. I hope you likes it, and you can get other stuff here.

your magic is real - luther (dallas,tx)

What do you get is you take a typical five piece band, sleeves heavy with 80's love, ready to make some fun music, and take away the drummer (no one cool in the 80's had one anyway), throw in some updated synth sounds, a little extra guitar, a falsetto sitting crooner, and a pedal steel? If handled badly, a cacophonous mess, or if handled well, Austin's Magic Surprise.

Wedging right into the current dance trends but eschewing the harsher aspects of the popular new-rave bangers inundating the scene right now, Magic Surprise 'goes their own way' while fitting perfectly into a fun show. The ear pleasing mix of washy and stabby synths and rhythmic lead guitar mixes well under the waspy vocals while the lyrical content touches on varied aspects of modern living and youth culture. Apparently a relative newcomer to the Austin scene, MS has the potential to appeal to a broad audience, from hipster-danceaholics to 30 something head-bobbers, so come and have a look for yourselves tomorrow night as Party Ends and the Mohawk present:

 Til' We're Blue or Destroy

Astronautalis

Magic Surprise

and DJ Markus with a K

At 6$ per over 21 and $8 under, it is sure to trump any plans you might already have for tomorrow night. So come on over.

ufffffffffffff - luther (dallas,tx)

Since day one, post three of Party Ends, Uffie has been representative of what we are about here. At the time, it was hot, new, ironic, and fun music, good in it's field, independent in nature, and obscure by choice. Well, things change, and not only have we expanded our horizons, so has little Uffie, of course.

Maintaining stunning popularity in the most elite of circles with only a few songs and an exclusive attitude, tracks like Pop the Glock have become classics beyond even, I'm sure, the 19year-old's expectations or even wildest dreams. My taste for the tongue in cheek hip-hop-tress has waxed and wained since those early days when I was introduced to her minimal faux-gangsta' style at a stupidly-uber-hip SXSW party in a clothing store along side other right-time-right-place-faves like Princess Superstar, but I feel that in spirit I have remained vigilant. I always check to see if she has finally released a new track, let alone a full length album, and I am determined to at least try to enjoy any songs that come along, despite her apparent peak with those first couple of tunes, and I have maintained the faith through all the Cobra Snake appearances and Pharell name drops. And so, I was excited when I dropped by the ol' MySpace, having noticed a new picture on her profile, to find something I hadn't heard yet, and wanted to share it with you. I don't know how new it is, but if it's old, maybe I can make it up to you by posting a bunch of other shit by her that I personally think is the best. Plus it's an excuse to post another picture of her. Chi-check it:

itchy, warm and scratchy - john (austin,tx)

<FADE IN>:

Abrupt medium close-up of Alvy Singer doing a comedy monologue.  He is wearing a crumbled sports jacket and tieless shirt; the background is stark.

ALVY:

"There's an old joke.  Uh, two elderly women are at a Catskills mountain resort, and one of 'em says: "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible."

The other one says, "Yeah, I know, and such ... small portions."

Woody Allen’s opening of Annie Hall is similar to how I feel about the free albums that Adult Swim puts out, more or less- only instead of the “such small portions” I am pleased with the freeness… and that’s about it. Even tho it is free I still don’t really care.

I bought the DangerMouse album on vinyl and listen to that now and then, and I downloaded Chrome Children, Chocolate Swim, Definitive Swim and now Warm and Scratchy- their venture into “indie rock.”  I love that Adult Swim is just going for it and getting their name out there by making tracks from buzzed about artists available and therefore getting some of the buzz projected onto themselves as a network- but album to album just doesn’t really hold up for multiple listens. They seem to serve as devices to make me say- “How about that Cartoon Network- they are so different.  The Food Channel doesn’t give out free songs! I bet Rachel ray doesn’t even know who the Rapture is!”

It's FANTASTIC MARKETING. Don’t get me wrong. I am just not a fan of the latest export in particular. Now, speaking of brilliant marketing- I can’t stop playing FIVE MINUTES TO KILL YOURSELF!

It’s dark, it's twisted and it's funnier than any silly Easter Egg type thing I have ever run across in the three Grand Theft Auto games that consumed roughly a few calendar years of my life. You can urinate on faulty computers and get shocked, you can have your zombie like co-workers beat you like a piñata, you can get attacked by a giant shark. It’s amazing.  Play FIVE MINUTES TO KILL YOURSELF!. Bible Fight is fun too- but gets old quick… and one more brilliant marketing ploy: terrorizing Boston with Moonite bombs.

For the Choc Swim free mp3 album click here, The Definitive Swim album can be ganked for free here, and the latest one, Warm and Scratchy here. We’ll get you started:

summer's start - john (austin,tx)

What a honor I have in presenting you with this flyer:

Please join us at the Mohawk  on June 14th for a night full of mind boggling indie rap, electro drum machines and enough keyboards to make you stop whining that this next season of Friday Night Lights will be the last.

Party Ends presents: Til We’re Blue or Destroy, Astronatalis, the Magic Surprise, and DJ Markus with a K  one night only that will surely karate chop your mind to shreds. That goes for you too my under 21's- this show is open to all ages! The Mohawk once again is on their way to being everyone’s favorite bar in Austin with their consistently amazing shows and most recently their praise for being so eco friendly in the Austin Chronicle.

You can read about my love for Til’ We’re Blue or Destroy here and of Astronautalis here, here and countless other times if you are a long time reader of the site. If it were socially acceptable to curate a total fan site for Astronautalis on par with Colbert Nation- I would do it. Think about it– a comprehensive database of all of his freestyle topics! Pictures! Discussion boards! I’m such a dork. Astro is one of the greats and the inside of the Mohawk doesn’t know what talent is going to hit it when he takes the stage… it might also be surprised when it see how much room TWBOD takes up.

I have seen the Magic Surprise once before and loved it. They are tight and are talented at programming samplers and drum machines as well as lap steel guitar playing. 80's tinged dance to the maxxx. It'll be worth getting there early for.

Mark your calendars for June 14th because this is a Party Ends event that is not to be missed! And finally- I read online that Hollywood is going to make a Thundercats movie.  Yeeeessss!

sunday scene - luther (dallas,tx)

Wow, the weeks just fly by lately. Maybe I'm getting older, maybe my mid-week meth benders are getting longer, but it just doesn't seem like I have the time I used to. For one thing, my wife and I are hunting for an apartment / rental house in Austin (if anyone has any leads... please), which is quite a task from a city on the other side of the state. Another element of the business these days are all of the events that this here web-site is lathering up, almost exclusively by John, over in  A-town. This week there's the Til We're Blue or Destroy and (our PE fav) Astronautalis, we have the next Draft Sessions later this month, which is going to be incredible since we finally got The Laughing at one, we have the freak out dance fun of Single Frame and La Snacks coming up, and the new-blog-hypster Bark Bark Bark on his way from AZ too, along with several other shows in the works that are going to blow your feeble little caffeine addled Sunday morning minds. Seriously, it's gonna be a great summer.

Anyway, I have some stuff to keep you occupied for a while this morning, even though it's a beautiful day and there are productive things you could be doing right now, along with all that stuff you've been putting off, and the mere fact that you're life is passing by right now, as you read this, and you'll never get this time back. So here it is:

I avoid talking about Sufjan Stevens as much as I can, because everyone else on the planet does it enough as it is, but that doesn't change the fact that he's a fine and shockingly talented artist. In this video the corn-fed Americana hero once again proves that his little farmer's baseball cap is not ironic by playing a banjo and singing about North America with those signature minor-key changes and his range roving croon. Playing his recently much-hocked cover of the Lakes of Canada by the Innocence Mission, on a roof top of the very appropriate Cincinnati's Memorial Hall. Portraying that elusive American image that so few (They Might be Giants, Sarah Vowell, etc.) are able to grasp, from La Blogotheque, here's the Take Away Show:

 ***************************************************

And I don't know if maybe everyone in the world but me has seen this (that's the way these things usually work), but if your a human than the two elements of what make this video awesome probably apply to you: you have a MySpace profile, and you think Matt Besser is a comic genius. Here's Matt Besser as Myspace's Tom teaching you how to use your MySpace profile as bait to catch Friends:

Video: Matt Besser of UCB- MySpace Tom

(He does loose points for saying that Elliot Smith died of a drug overdose, though. I mean, it's not like he didn't do drugs, but that's just a little homework)

And what Sunday would be complete without some Baby Cakes, although this one is getting a little more fucked up, and a little less funny than before. It's still good, and did I mention fucked up?

And some follow-up Professor Brothers:

rachael can too - luther (dallas,tx)

Sometimes you just stumble onto the best things, wacky ol' Myspace. Anyway, girl fronted indie-pop can get real generic, real fast (well, scratch 'girl fronted', it all can), so it's nice to hear something that blends elements like classic late-90's fem-centric indie songs, clean electronic elements, and acoustic guitar drive into something even somewhat fresh.

That's what helps to set Rachael Cantu apart from other 'indie' acts still holding the singer-songwriter torch high and dry as we all fall victim to the comings and goings of hot dance songs and sulky folkways. It's not some knockoff Scout Niblet droning through overdriven head bobbers, these songs are diverse, ranging from hand clap stompers (Your Hips are Bad) to low key balladry (Blood Laughs), and hold their own through the lo-fi charm and sometime home-brew recording. Cantu is no stranger to her influences, having recorded with legends (well, in my book anyway) like Kori Gardner of Mates of State, and Jason Gnewikow of The Promise Ring, and played shows with the likes of other classics The Getup Kids and Ben Lee.

what it do - john (austin,tx)

Big bad Anticon Records  is back with a dope new act- THEE MORE SHALLOWS!  And what do you know – they got them selves a myspace account. These three dudes make it look easy.  Their music is somber, it’s lush, it’s unusual, it’s slow jam dancey and over all it is just plain radical.  The new album is called the Book of Bad Breaks and is at fine retailers near you.  When supporting Anticon Records I can’t recommend BackSpin Records enough here in Austin- it is the only store around with it’s own Anticon section!  If you don’t live in Austin or feel like combing your hair and putting on clothes-- pick it up at the Anticon store here.

The group is out and about on tour right now and is swinging thru Austin with some of our city’s harder working bands- the Boxing Lesson and Aster. Get ready for the Emo’s Lounge show on June 15th with this dope mp3.  Enjoy!

MP3: Thee More Shallows- Night at the Knight School

Also- I can’t get enough of the latest Car Stereo (wars) mash up of Chamillionaire and Ratatat. If you don’t have this yet in your iTunes, make up for lost time. It’s fun.

MP3: Car Stereo (wars)- I’ve Been a Criminal for About 17 years

Another good track you need is the Spank Rock remix of the new Bjork joint Earth Intruders. If you are a fan of either or both this is the track for you. Not to filthy and not to crazy.

Cop this:
MP3: Bjork- Earth Intruders (spank rock remix)

And Finally: I can’t get enough of the Silver Apples. This Late 60’s duo made amazing songs full of percussive beats and bizarre droney/Ray Manzarek-y synthesizers. I don’t fully understand “Krautrock” but I believe these guys qualify and there for I have come to the conclusion that it is not as bad of a genre as it’s name makes it out to be.  This is coming from a guy who has casually accepted “grime", "freak folk", and "nerd core”.  If you ever run across anything by the Silver Apples on vinyl pick it up for me, I’m good for it… In the meantime, get your psyhedellic shine on with these:

three strikes, you're out - john (austin,tx)

You have the right to any opinion you like- but you have to love the Hold Steady. If you do not dig these guys… I’m afraid it is straightjacket time if you, know what I’m sayin'? Also you have to admire the kookiness of Manny Rameriez of the Boston Red Socks… this is coming from a guy (me) who could give a shit about sports most of the time… but Manny and his very large clothes make me happy. I gotta give it a playa who stirs things up- he is like a baseball playing Boba Fett.

I digress- check out this cover of Take Me Out To the Ball Game from America’s best bar band!

MP3: the Hold Steady- Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Also check out the Hold Steady at Emo’s in Austin on the 8th and at Haily’s in Denton on the 9th.  If I were a betting man I would call my Wells Fargo agent and tell him to place a bet on me getting drunk and singing along with Craig as obnoxious as the best of them. I wonder if banks can place bets…

pretty vacant - luther (dallas,tx)

Aren't you tired of picking out good songs for yourself? I sure am; thats why I'm such a fan of Dj mixes. Like pod-casts without all that annoying talk, I may or may not get introduced to great new shit, and a fair bit of classics all in the time it takes to download and burn a single file (even if it is, like, two hundred megabytes). That's also why I'm excited about the new project going on over at our friend's We Shot JR's place by the name of We Shot a Mix. Over the coming Summer they will be bringing readers dance-mixes put together by choice bands and Dj's from the DFW area, featuring original remixes and custom lists, this is sure to help keep our upcoming blistering months cool as iceeeee.

The first mix comes from recently regrouped High Society members in the form of Pretty Vacant. We haven't talked about this boy-girl duo on Party Ends before, but listening to their remixes of MIA and Crystal Castles right now makes me pretty sure that we will write about them much more in the future. So head over to WSJR and check out the writeup and rundown on their party starters and pick up the mix. Also, check out the pretty choice tracks on the Pretty Vacant myspace as well, you won't be sorry.

conchords premier - john (austin,tx)

So, I finally had the chance to see the first episode of this new HBO comedy show, and holy shit. It's really funny! I mean, seriously. If you're lucky enough to live in Austin, there is no way you can have something better to do tomorrow night than go over the the coolest theater ever (the Alamo Draft House) and see the premier of this show with a bunch of other like minded, prgressive youths like yourself FOR FREE! Yeah, that's the kicker. All you have to do is head over to this site and RSVP, buy a pitcher of beer, and enjoy the show. You might also be able to pick up some hot-ass Party Ends swag as well... just maybe. Yeah.

vivek - luther (dallas,tx)

Hitting a happy medium for the kids these days can be tricky, not knowing if your audience grew up listening to Tupac or *N Sync, or more commonly both, can throw you for a loop if your not careful. So combining more than a couple of genres is not only a good idea, it's steadily becoming essential. And so enters the post bubblegum-pop indie rock. Fraught with the clean lines and clarity of turn of the century radio, but thematically and sonically more difficult, and ultimately much more satisfying than anything pumped through your local Clear Channel subsidiary. It's a bold area, with broad appeal and potential to pull in more of a fan base than any of the individual genres could on their own, if it's done right.

Well, Vivek Shraya seems to be doing something right, and it's potential is high. To be honest, I didn't know what to make of his clean vocals on top of overtly produced digital beats and synths at first. A little dirty, and still holding onto the elements that have kept groups like Younglove moving up the charts, the songs hold onto their aesthetic through musical themes and twists on the typical formula. Vivek, a Canadian, has recently released an EP by the name of If We're Not Talking this last month, so check it out if you like these tunes.

sunday scenes - luther (dallas,tx)

Ahh Sunday, it is shitty shitty shitty outside today as I woke up to 65 mile and hour wind and "nickle" sized hail. So I think it's a good day to stay inside and watch some good internet TV. As impressive as sites like Qoob and even You-Tube are becoming, there are few organizations who are handling the internet video revolution as well as Vice. We all loved the Vice: Guide to World Travel, and were disappointed when it was decided that followups to the DVD would only be on the internet, but this has afforded Vice the opportunity to not only present us with their hard-hitting political journalism, but also a ton of other visual fun that wouldn't be caught sued on public TV stations.

The Cute Show declares: "Everything around us is dark. Dark, dark, dark." Well, it's true, between politics, genocide, and Lindsey Lohan it can be hard to keep your spirits up sometimes, but that's why you have VBS.TV's Cute Show inviting you to "play with some kittens eat an ice cream cone with rainbow sprinkles and do a little dance." The premise is simple: each episode revolves around some group of especially cute animals. They video tape them, talk about them, talk to their owners, and pretty much show a bunch of gratuitous shots of grotesquely charming things like bunny rabbits and kittens. With most episodes containing very little setup for the information and visuals presented, it's the equivalent of porn for small children. Oh, and did I mention that it's addictive as hell? Yeah, just like CuteOverload.com, it could eat up half your work day before you know it, so watch out.

And if you're interested in something, well- equally gratuitous, and a little more adult, check out the soft-core fun of Shot by Kern.

Video: VBS.TV- Shot By Kern- Sophie

And, of course, the old standby. The highlight of every issue of Vice and a mesmerizing fun, minor-celebrity filled good time, Do's and Dont's and Friends.

Video: VBS.TV- Do's and Dont's and Friends

Oh yeah, and don't forget to watch some Babycakes over and over and over. There is also a new Professor Brothers cartoon, so don't miss that.

Video: Super Deluxe- Babycakes: Diary #2

******************************************

And, well, this may not be that new, but I've been listening to some Crystal Castles that I recently acquired, and it's still good, no matter how popular they get, or how over-hyped their 8-bit chomping might be. I've always enjoyed it, though in relatively small doses, and this track is no exception.

MP3: Crystal Castles- Love and Caring

Also, don't let it slip your frail day-off minds that Party Ends and the Mohawk are bringing you Austin folks a real treat in the near future in the form of Til' We're Blue or Destroy and Astronautalis this coming 14th of June! This is a great lineup, so clear your calendars.

And, the June Draft Sessions is sneaking up as well, featuring one of our absolute favorite bands ever in the history of stuff and everything, The Laughing. The show will also feature a slew of Austin rappers who will, get this, flow over music performed by the Laughing themselves. Nice? Nice! So keep an eye out here at Party Ends for updates that are just around the corner as well as a confirmed, full fledged list of hippers and hoppers for the evening.

saturday par-tays - john (austin,tx)

Hey there. Here’s the $60,000 question: “What to do Saturday night in Austin”.  Where are you going to show off that new Cosby dance you learned after freeze framing the opening sequence of season 6?

(this is completely worth checking out, if for nothing else but the food)

Well, you have two options to ‘bust a Huxtable’ from what I can tell. Austin’s Wahoo’s proudly welcomes Dallas troublemakers the Party  for the first in a monthly off the gold chain dance night full of the latest euro-hop-dub-step-indie-dance-clash that comes complete with (are you sitting down? (Of course you are unless you are checking PartyEnds.com on a free computer at the apple store or whatever) free **breakfast tacos** at the end of the night. That my friends- is how the party ends)

Chance two to show off the Heathcliff Huxt is over at the famous Beauty Bar with the Illustrious Car Stereo (wars) . CS(w) brings along local arcade fire enthusiasts the Corto Maltese  and PartyEnds favs Many Birthdays on board to open the night. (Many Birthdays are a last min addition.. will be updated flyer soon....)  Then, Chris and Adreon finish off the night with all sorts of live drum machines, mashups and all the standard crazy fun that gets said DJ group the REAL notoriety (as opposed to internet blogs) of Blender magazine. Check it out – it’s the issue with naked Avril on the cover- prolly located next to the new NME with naked Beth Ditto on the cover.

Choose wisely.  Who will be wearing the more expensive hoodie with the ironic allover print? Who will play the most recent mash from thehoodinternet.com? Only fate will tell. Best of luck to both parties.
