what the jandek - luther (dallas,tx)

So, there is this dude named Jandek, who's coming to play a show in Fort Worth, who I've read a bunch of shit about in like, Mojo, and one of his biggest appeals seems to be that no one knows- well, pretty much anything about him. So this article probably won't be very long. If I remember correctly (because I'm too lazy to go do any actual research at the moment), he has released somewhere in the vicinity of 50 albums of crude, elemental folk songs, played a rare and secretive handful of shows, and in the process has created an army of loving and eternally dedicated fans. For a long period of time, he played no shows and released pretty much no photos of himself.

Minimal and often outrightly strange, the music is very much an acquired taste, but it's actually really good. Think, an even less accessible young Bill Callahan- maybe, Rain on Lens with less instruments and less melody, and the free-form elements of early modern-folk and beat poetry. He has been influential, in ways most people don't understand, for decades to more musicians than you would probably readily accept. But the more you listen to the music, the more you hear it in today's musicians, and the more you comprehend why. Try these tunes out, and don't miss what is probably a once in a lifetime, or at least couple decades, chance to see him live in your area.

MP3: Jandek - Naked in the Afternoon

Jandek will be playing July 12th at the Rose Marine Theater in Fort Worth. I've never been there, but it looks great. Thanks a whole bunch to our freinds at We Shot Jr for cluing me in on this show.

I've nbever even heard of this guy, are you sure he's important?

thanks for the songs!

Oh, Hi Jessica. I forgot that if you hadn't heard of an artist then they obviously aren't important.
