single frame's fantastic four - john (austin,tx)
Austin’s Single Frame started as a three piece, rotated around a guitarists for a while then dropped down to a two-piece when we last reviewed them, just like they dropped the word “Ashtray” from the initial name from back in 2000. NOW they have assembled into a mighty/synth/art/electro/dark/rock/4-piece. The first chance to see this new incarnation of the best band in Austin to so effortlessly combine innovative art and music is Friday May 4th at Emo’s when they will be opening for The ever so god damn relaxingly mellow Album Leaf and Mush Records’ Lymbyc Systym . Looks like a decent place to be on Friday night to me.
Not only does Single Frame boast a new cast of musicians but a fresh set list as well. Joining the band is Richard Richards (bass/keyboards/samples) along with former Single Frame guitarist, Ian Graham. I hope that Richard Richards is as awesome as his name makes him out to be. Overall, Single frame is a rock band with some dancy electronic elements to the sound but it is impossible to overlook the experimental aspect to their songs. Body/End/Basement has underwater vocals, peculiar percussion devices such as typewriters, paint cans, pocket change, etc… I imagine that live with the addition of the fourth member that these aspects of the band will more filled out.
Part the Faint, part the Paper Chase, with the electronic elements, the dark themes, and the song titles (respectively.) The start/stop drums and rapid vocals make for original and unique song structures and make my jaw drop ever time I see them live.
I mentioned earlier this week how much I respect drummer Adreon Henry as an artist musically and otherwise and his enthusiasm for this new manifestation of his flagship project is stirring: “This configuration makes me want to play drums and write music all day… which is something that hasn’t happened in a while. I am really excited about the new material we have been coming up with lately; everything seems to be clicking.”
Local media collective and friend to PartyEnds.com SUPER! ALRIGHT! has worked extensively with Single Frame in creating videos and interesting stage shows across the country for the band. Grandpa always said “when in a cage fight - if you put a good band up against another good band that has chopped up bizarre footage behind them that matches up perfectly- the latter band would win.” Wiser words have never been spoken.
