local live 11: free release party - john (austin,tx)
Thursday night! The KVRX Local Live volume 11 CD/DVD combo comes out, and in celebration of there is going to be a bitchin' little show over at the Irie Bean Coffee Bar (2310 South Lamar.). The 2-disc set is titled “From Assacre to Zookeeper” because both Austin polar opposites grace the disk with their respective talents.
The whole shebang is produced by University of Texas students, from the booking of the bands right on down to the planning of the release party! This is truly an accomplishment for the only station in Austin who is whole-heartedly committed to playing “none of the hits all of the time.”
The show starts at 6pm and will feature artists that appear on the CD. The lineup includes Jerm Pollet who is best known these days for his former affiliation with the Sinus Show. Jerm performs awesome little power pop novelty songs with topics ranging from KISS to growing older. It’s like an Austin version of Gene Simmons' Family Jewels. Tee Double, another performer for the evening, has been in the Austin hip-hop game longer than most, and he can, and will, rock any stage set before him. It’s been a while since I've caught him and I'm looking forward to it.
At 9pm the crowd is in for quite the treat: (as any PE reader who went to last weekend’s Draft Sessions can attest) The Lovely Sparrows. The Lovely Sparrows have an amazing little hand screened EP available at End of and Ear and Waterloo, here in town that has a habit of needing to be restocked quite often (because its so damn good – snatch!); so save yourself the trip into public and grab it here for a mere 8 bones. My, and countless other national publications (online and otherwise) hype is totally justified. The band is as talented and tight a unit as there can be. With a big sound reminiscent of other Austin groups like Okkervil River, Til We’re Blue, and Tacks the Boy Disaster, the group’s songs are truly original and have some of the best bridges that I have ever heard.
My fascination (read: love) for all things Chris Simpson is beyond dorky. The ex Mineral and Gloria Record mastermind brings Zookeeper up to bat to close out the night in a truly grandiosely high pitched and emotive way.
Folks, this is the type of diverse lineup that KVRX is known for and frankly- I think commands a cover, but the fact the show is free plays a nice little mind game- its encourages you to pick up a copy of the latest in a long line of quality Local Live cds. Well played KVRX- well played indeed....
