human giants - luther (dallas,tx)

One of the best shows I saw at SXSW was not music related, well, there was music, like, over it, but it was mostly just dudes talking and stuff. And that thing was at the insanely hard to get into Mess With Texas show curated by the man's man, David Cross. I mean, sure I saw Deerhunter (creepy skinny arms and all) there, and some really heavy crazy bands, and even the Black Lips (but I saw them, like, fifty times), and I have to hand it to Dewar's, who let the free whiskey flow like they were in the ball pit at Chuck E Cheese; but that was all icing on the cake. The real substance of that day was the brilliant (and remarkably crude) stand-up comedy in rapid successions and lots of incredible clips from the new MTV series Human Giant, which airs it's premier episode tonight at 10:30PM (around here, anyway).

Lorded over by the talented and indie-centric ("indie-tastic"?) Aziz Ansari, who is responsible for some of the funniest internet videos I have seen to date, the cast also includes Rob Huebel (who has been in tons of great stuff) and Paul Scheer (UCB Theater LA, represent!). Check out some of Aziz's older work, some of which will also be appearing on Human Giant, here. You can, I assure you, expect great things from these dudes (I mean, not like, Upright Citizens great, but maybe the State great).

The first episode is available for free download on i-Tunes here.
