macromantics - luther (dallas,tx)

I just thought it was worth mentioning that I have really been digging this new track from Australia's Macromantics. An emcee strait outa' the Outback (not the steak house), Romy Hoffman used to play guitar for Ben Lee (which is awesome) and now has a few music projects rolling around, the latest of which is this. Obviously riding the coat tails of SOV and M.I.A. (at least a little, come on!), Hoffman's flow is still unique and powerful, with a jagged edge to it's clever content. Socially conscious and self aware, the beats, provided by DJ Amy, and fast paced flow meld into something fresh and genuine. At any rate, I like it, though I've only heard this one track so far, and I think we can expect some great things to come of this in the near future, especially after Kill Rock Stars releases her first album Moments in Movement later this year. Look for her touring with the omnipotent Deerhoof in the next couple of months, as well as some SXSW action.

i'm a big dork - luther (dallas,tx)

So, I was thinking the other day, that if I was going to make a list of favorite books for someone, you know, in one of those fantastical celebrity interviews you do in your head when your bored, "what would they be?". In addition to talking about how I managed to write the bestseller of all time while simultaneously directing the number one movie in America in the same year that I won all those Grammies, I would tell the interviewer that my reading preferences are not traditional. That some of my downright, all-time favorite novels would be in the graphic form.

(from Watchmen)

So my mind began to wander to my favorite comic books, and I assembled a list in my head that was, in my humble opinion, pretty respectable. "What could I do with such a list?" I asked myself. And so I concluded that, despite Party Ends probably never having mentioned a comic before on this site (though John and I both are somewhat active readers of such), that I would include my list of favorite comics and graphic novels for any readers who might be interested in dedicating the time to expand their minds with alternative literature. I also concluded that I would force / shame John into doing the same.

So here is my list. I'm sure there are hardcore Comic-con geeks out there who will call me an amateur and an idiot for not including, I don't know, Spiderman: Years 65'-70' or something. But, I'm not really into all that; so heres what I got, in the two years or so that I've been reading them:

1. Bone (Jeff Smith) - When you first pick this book up, you'll start reading it and enjoy the silly colorful characters, the clean, sharp, cartoon quality, and the loveability of the overall package. You might be a whole chapter in before you come to me and say: "this is a kids book Luther! Why would I want to read this?",  but I will only say "Read on, good friend, and you'll see." By the end of this graphic novel, which in it's entirety reaches over 1300 pages, you'll understand that this literary treck, written and drawn over ten years, grows into a full blown epic. The story grows increasingly complex, revealing a lush and thought out history in a fantasy universe only rivaled by J.R.R. Tolkien. Beloved characters grow, fight, and die; and, you'll get a pretty good laugh pretty often, and pretty much all the way through the book. You won't be disappointed. Plus, for some reason Scholastic (purveors of such fine literature as the Fear Street Series) bought the rights to the book and are gradually releasing incredible full color trade paperbacks of each chapter. Look for those. And also keep your eyes open for a feature length film, since the story rights were recently purchased by none other than Pixar Animation. Fly.1 1

2. The Watchmen (Alan Moore) - There is no way to describe how something involving "superheroes" can be so fucking affecting. Alan Moore may be a lunatic, but he can bring out more about the human condition in one chapter of a book like this than a lot of classics can in an entire cover-to-cover. Epic in story with memorable, human characters; the writing is as gritty as the beautiful 80's artwork. If it isn't already somewhere, this will be standard reading in college classrooms everywhere in the near future.

3. The Sandman Chronicles (Niel Gaiman) - Another piece of literary masterwork stretched out over ten books, this will also be in classrooms (along with some of Gaiman's novels that already are). Drawing on an extensive knowledge of classic literature and mythology, Gaiman weaves a tragic story over eons of characters stretched too thin and locked into events that they can't break away from. The artwork gets pretty shady in parts, as the series winds through both the 80's and 90's and several illustrators, but the writing is solid and researched. The spin-off books about central characters are good too. I can't wait for them to at least try to make a movie out of this.

4. The Hellboy Series (Mike Mignola) - Yes! So far as series that are still being written, this is my favorite. Mignola's love of mythology, crypto-zoology, and Lovecraftian mythos is fused with his love of drawing bad-ass monsters and writing witty dialog. Weather illustrated by Mignola himself (a true innovator) or one of his friends, these are always entertaining, smart, and downright cool. This also includes the excellent B.P.R.D spin-off aswel as the movie by Guillermo del Toro, which is incredible.

5. Black Hole (Charles Burns) - This book if fucking scary. Explaining the subtlety of how frightening this piece is doesn't really work, you have to read it for yourself. Set in a present day town that is plagued by some elusive, physically mutating STD that only effects the towns teenagers, the levels of interpretation are infinite. The detail and brilliance of the artwork also defy explanation. Each frame should be on the wall of a gallery.

6. The Fables Series (Bill Willignham) - Another series that is still being written, and snatching up some great awards. When you try to explain the premise of this series(characters from fables are being forced out of their 'worlds/dimensions' and into ours and they have to try to get by here in modern day America), you sound like an imbecile; but, it presents so many opportunities for so many interesting plotlines. Well developed, lovable, rich characters, all based on fables from well known (Snow White) to somewhat obscure (Little Boy Blue). Brilliant. The art is pretty damn good, too.

7. V for Vendetta (Alan Moore) - Yes, Alan Moore is a genius. Great movie, great book. The writing rivals, probably everything else on this list, and only looses points for being a little slow and confined in it's characters, though that gave Moore the opportunity to create such personal depth that it's not unusual to be brought to tears while reading this book. A must own.

8. Stray Bullets (David Lapham) - This is a little lesser known than some others on my list, but in the comic world, it's still a big gun (no pun intended). Following the eventful, unbelievable, and often times sadistic lived of some colorful careere criminals, this series goes from comic to depressing in swoops and dives. A little scattered (again, no pun intended), the story lines eventually begin to interweave as the books go on, cobbling together a sort of alternate universe in which crime in much more prevalent and profitable than most stories would lead you to believe.

9. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Alan Moore) - Again, and for the last time on my  list (though taking up almost a third of it) Alan Moore does it again. I have heard nothing but bad things about the film version, staring everyones favorite Scott. This was not their favorite movie. This short series of comics mixes some of my favorite elements: arcana technology, turn of the century mustaches, and literary characters. Based mostly on nineteenth century literary fiction, the League consists of fleshed out versions of far from perfect literary heroes, from the invisible man to Jekel/Hyde. More of a 'comic' than others on this list, it's still fun, cool, and vaguely disturbing.

10. Blankets (Craig Thompson) - Finally, this is the first graphic novel I ever read, at the suggestion of several of my friends (including John). Touching, sad, true to life, and ultimately uplifting, even life changing. This book struggles with some tough issues as you follow the protagonist (Craig himself) through his recollection of his first love, and loss. Everything from religion to sex is explored with excruciating candor. I have been waiting way too long for his next book, so check this one out before hand, so you can help me picket his publishers till they push the new one out.1

The point here is that you should buy Bone. You should also, at least read the rest of these books, especially if you consider yourself well rounded when it comes to literature and you haven't read at least some of them. Come on!

P.S. My favorite curse word is probably "holy fuck".

good,bad, or queen? - luther (dallas,tx)

I don't know how I could have convinced myself that Damon Albarn could be involved in something particularly bad. Though some recent projects have been disappointing (almost every track off of the last Gorillaz album except Feel Good Inc.), Albarn never fails to produce something at the very least listen-able, but most of the time downright brilliant. Thank goodness this seems to be falling into the latter category.

Apparently the group isn't actually called The Good the Bad and the Queen, so I guess the name is TBA, but for the time being, it works for me. With yet another super-band, the superlative aspects seem to just keep growing. With the Clash's bass player Paul Simonon, Verve guitarist Simon Tong, and a Nigerian drummer and co-founder of the Afrobeat genre Tony Allen, all lorded over in the production phase by none other than previous co-Albarn-conspirator Danger Mouse, it almost seems like so many rights that you're inevitably going to end up with a wrong. But from what I've heard so far from their debut self titled full length, released earlier this month, it's a recipe for a group that immediately has the feel of a seasoned, broken in band.  Darker, denser and leaning more toward the aesthetic feel of Damon's mother England, this is a nice departure from the futuro-techno Gorillaz dance music, and the Afro-centric Mali-Music of recent non-Blur projects.

Check out this kind of painfully boring video for the first single from GBatQ and see/hear for yourself:

ed banger's ball - john (austin,tx)

(photo cred: PartyEnds from Austin Beauty Bar, May 2006)

Ed Banger Records is based out of Paris and is putting out some of the best electronic music that there is right now.  Everything from the all too adorable Uffie to the dance floor disintegrating Justice.  If you read any French dance-punk blogs, this statement will be verified… only, you know... in French. Vice Records just put out an digital compilation of be best of the best tracks from Ed Bangers Records so that we Colbert Report loving Americans can enjoy the dance love too.  Ed Rec Vol 1 is a compilation of 12 songs from the Ed Banger squad and you probably already know and love at least someone in the lineup…

Please be our guest and check out this free MP3 download!

beck + gondry = hell yeah - luther (dallas,tx)

We love Michel Gondry, and we looove Beck (despite a bit of lackluster work in the recent past), and when they got together for the Deadweight video way back in 96' they made one of the only watchable movie-tie-in-with-useless-clips music videos ever to light up a TV. And finally, they are re united once again. For one of the myriad downpour of videos flowing forth from the Warhol Factory-esque project that is The Information, their marriage of sound and light is always magical. Check out this video from the forthcoming The Information: Deluxe Edition and understand why neither of these artists should work on anything separately again!

not the babysitters club - luther (dallas,tx)

The Rappers Delight Club is a "musical side project for a rotating group of elementary school children" based out of Silver Springs Mayland who, get this, write and perform their own rap songs. Alright, now, I'm not saying I had a bad childhood, by any means, but- what a step up for the next generation? I feel kind of gipped!

Talk about starting them off right. With brilliant lyrical content the likes of "I free people like Frederick Douglass/ I eat other rappers like some chicken nuggets", you can't go wrong. And, so far as cute goes: the cutality of this music is off the charts, you have to tape a whole other chart to the top of the first charts if you even want to get an idea of where the overal cuteness line is headed. This is a don't miss.  Things like this encourage a new level of creativity and cutural awareness that standardized testing and phiscal arts cutbacks have sucked out of generations past. Go to thier myspace, listen to the music, and tell them how much you appreciate all the time, effort, and dope-ass that flow went into making these songs.

Here is a little taste:

hot flash - luther (dallas,tx)

Hot Flash! declares on it's Myspace: "I'm a party, I'm a scene". In a city where, even as a relatively active youth, it's hard to identify where a random group of kids here for cheap drinks ends and a scene begins, this is a promising statement. The idea behind it seems to be to gather together the youngsters in this town to throw away their cares and merge into one, hulking, well dressed monster, that will then dance all night. Since it's inception a few months ago, and with the adverts really getting up for their first party last December the 16th at the Fallout Lounge, it seems like I've seen this little cloud guy everywhere (often times with a Santa hat, but I'm guessing thats seasonal). I hear the first swaray was a pretty raucous success, and I am really hoping that becomes the broader case.

Hot Flash! #2 will be taking place this coming Saturday, January the 27th at the Fallout Lounge here in Dallas. If the first party is any testament, everybody who's anybody cool will be there, and you wouldn't want to be left out of that lineup, I don't think.

Featuring the founder, Stephen R. and DJ Schwa Dj-ing, it's sure to be a blast. Starts at 10pm, so don't be more than fashionably late.

Here's something that seemed sort of in line with whats going down here:

another poster - luther (dallas,tx)

I know it's a little redundant, but I just love show posters. I stumbled onto this other poster for the show tomorrow night in Denton put on by We Shot JR. It's a little hard to read, but I like it. Yeah. Cool.

Oh, and here is a track from the phenominal Tree Wave, who will be there:

busdriver - luther (dallas,tx)

Who would have thought our little friend Busdriver would one day grow up to be a featured Myspace Artist?! Well, actually I'm sure he's destined for much bigger things, but at the moment, you'll see his face pop up when your logging into your favorite time eating web site; so, why not just skip that and jump strait to his Myspace page here and check out the full listing for his upcoming US tour. Unfortunately, the closest everyone's favorite avantcore rapper is coming to John or myself is a Houston show with RJD2, but we saw him with Islands last SXSW and it was off the hook. Also, download one of his oh so dope flow tunes:

we shot jr: projection 3 - luther (dallas,tx)

I've never been to this place, but it's in Denon, so there is a high potential that it's cool, and tomorrow night at Secret Headquarters the very cool dudes at We Shot JR are bringing us some cool dude music. WSJR know whats up when it comes to hot music, so I would suggest this show based soley on the track record, but check out these bands and see for yourself. Tomorrow night, Doors are at 7, $5 at the door, and a free keg (however long that lasts). Otherwise, definitely BYOB. It also happens to feature the rockinist' DJ kids around, Flashlight Party.1

The night will feature sets by:

inside on a day like today? i'm outraged - john (austin,tx)

Meryll is Andrew Hernandez, Kyle Bradshaw, and Art Silva.  The three make up a fantastic and extremely underrated band from Austin, TX who have toured across 20 states and recorded relentlessly for 4 years now.

(all photos from a Meryll house party a while back)

The dense and yet poppy songs stack organs on top of acoustic guitars, brushed drums on top of bass, and earnest vocals on top of computer loops to create an altogether distinctive band.    Lyrically, Meryll has a gift allowing the group to construct personal and secret relationships with the listener.  They are informal and forthcoming without crossing the all too dangerous “emo” line.

Austin folk - catch Meryll at the Parish with the Lovely Sparrows this Thursday, tomorrow night, January 25th!
Here are some excellent Mp3s for you and yours:

The recording techniques are varied with great skill. Stopping My Signs begins as if sung from the other end a sad hallway, and once the song gets onto full swing, that before empty hallway singing has a dreamlike fantasy edge to it.  Sometimes taking lessons from the once great Appleseed Cast and Jebidiah, the group really doesn’t have a black and white comparison that can be drawn.  In To Touch the simplest guitar and doubling vocals are quickly left in the dust by drum machines and a full assortment of guitar layers.  The song literally invites you to come over and sit down on the couch with the central character for simple contact. The build here from start to finish is perhaps their best.

Esotype Records is a wonderful art rock label from just outside of Houston Texas. The label is also the home to Waco’s Ethan Durrellel.  The band and the record label are surely very excited about the attention Meryll has been getting from Japan.  A Japanese record label re-released their debut full length You’ve Got Cousins and word is it has been met with great success.  We wish the band tons of luck in Texas and abroad.

the first draft - john (austin,tx)

The first Draft Sessions went off without a hitch, thanks in part to all the sponsors (Independence Brewery, Insane In the Meshbane Productions, Groove Labs, Raw Word Records and Starke Circus) but most of all thanks to the steaming masses of people (approximately 400 and up?) who came out in the cold rainy weather to a part of town that they typically (for the most part) don’t frequent.  There were no fights and lots of smiles, which is what I chalk up to having a great time. Even the (free) beer line, which at one point was comparable to the Great Wall of China in length, contained shiny happy people, clapping their hands. Michael Stipe would have been proud.

Due to the success of our inaugural Draft Sessions event talks are already in the works to do February with more bathrooms and more beer stations.  So, clearly, all will have a more fun time.

DJ Orion seamlessly juggled Diplo, Bonde Do Role, and Stevie Wonder beats underneath a MIA acapella to much amazement from onlookers. DJ Jazz One kept things moving, perhaps best with his live mash of Jay Z  and Tom Petty. Their sets were both as diverse as they were full of talent. Shit was tight all around.

Foot Foot opened the with the front man, Brian Lawhorn in a devil costume and closed the set with said front man flailing on the floor. In between:  high notes were nailed and effects pedals were manipulated… and at one point a well-placed Cars cover was included.  Foot Foot delivered unapologetically their unique rock and roll in front of the brewing tanks, which were lit up in a way that would have impressed the set designer from Dream Girls.

Clap! Clap! has a new album in the can and is set to get it heard by the masses in a matter of months.  They utilized their headlining position of Draft Sessions to test the waters of several fined tuned new songs.  Prognosis?  Extremely positive.  The crowd was huddled around the band in awe of the sheer clapping brilliance!  Clap! Clap! has everything working for them right now because the dance punk sound is currently marketable (and certainty danceable)  and they have a distinct attention-grabber built into their very essence: clapping.  The bond the group instantly makes with its audience is perpetually fascinating and as a result their fan base is known to trek all over Texas to support the synthesizer-loving group.  Clap! Clap! begins their sets, the audience claps along and this continues for the remainder of their 45 minutes. Rinse and repeat.

Many attendants walked away with commemorative Independence Brewery pint glasses, and everyone walked away with their fill of whatever it was they needed… whether it be getting out and about before another rumored freeze (ice storm 07 part duex?!) or their fill of free good local brew.  The need to see a man roll on the floor like an Austin Les Savy Fav was met, as was the overall curiousity of what a rock and roll show would be like in a brewery.  We covered all of the bases.  Above all, we delivered on the mission statement of the whole Draft Sessions premise: Independent music.  Independent Beer.

Thanks to EVERYONE who made it out to the South Austin brewery, dragged their friends out, tended the bar, ran the sound, played the records or guitars, drank the beer, waited in the lines, donated the money, and especially those who wore the Party Ends pins with pride.  Ha.

Thanks to all of you, Draft Sessions is set to have a healthy life.  Cheers!

tea party, or ship wreck? - john (austin,tx)

Hey! Snap out of the curled up, anxiety attack fetal position!  You should just stop your whining and listen to  Ship Wreck. Their Pavement -like lackadaisical indie rock comes across as catchy and pretty.  You will know each chorus after one listen.

Their latest EP House of Cards has a very high production value that pays off with full acoustic sounds interweaving with spacey solos.  The tracks consists mainly of simple indie rock that is loaded with heartfelt earnestness. Ship Wreck welcomes and embraces 90’s guitar rock and is turning quite a few heads in the mid west.

weekend update - luther (dallas,tx)

This is just a little update on the many weekends goings on both here and in Austin: Reportedly, my sourced inform me, our little shindig at the Independence Brewery was a complete and utter success. John will bring you the full lowdown and some very silly pictures in the very near future. Thanks so much to everyone who came out, braved the weather, and made it such a killer evening.

Elsewhere...

The new show at Art Prostitute is amazing. Go and see it yesterday and, if you able, buy something, cause we were only there near the beginning of the evening and the red dots were multiplying like crazy. The music was pumping, the drinks were top shelf, and as always, it was a lot of fun.

Immediately thereafter, the Roxy Cottontail show blew up Zubar down ol' Greenville way. With other local powerhouses, $elect and Sob3r, Central Booking did everyone proud. Go over to their site and check out this great interview with Roxy with a cool list of her top club singles of the moment.

tan analogies - luther (dallas,tx)

It's that time again kids, our favorite gallery is having another opening. The new exhibit, Pale Analogies, is said to be great; these openings are always a good time, and the art is always incredible. many birthdays - john (austin,tx)

The artwork on the Many Birthdays self released EP entitled “Days of the Beat/ Days of Hollow” is simple and DIY in every sense.  The handmade packaging has traces of Atari enthusiasm, touches of Asian symbols and the CD sleeve itself reeks of spray-paint.  These things all sum up Many Birthdays.  As an added bonus- the EP comes with a cool-ass disenchanted cat sticker.  So maybe it’s my biasness towards cats or maybe it’s the paint fumes… but Many Birthdays is rocking my socks.  The music has the simplicity of Casio beats with HUGE swooping synths over it all and manages to be extremely captivating and melodic at the same time.  After listen upon listen I can’t help but reminisce about playing Final Fantasy on my neighbor’s Super Nintendo.  It has that imaginative vibe.  It would be a perfect soundtrack for an indie rock Dance Dance Revolution.

This Austin TX electronic group comes off like a more beat oriented and cinematic Deerhoof. And I am not just saying that because all of the female lyrics are Japanese.  Both groups pull off noise rock and experimental goals while staying within the confines of their respective genres of music.

Days of the Beat/ Days of Hollow is a good EP to own from an innovative and creative group.  It’s available on their website and in select Austin music stores…

Please download this track and see for your self!

The Laughing have completed their debut EP Tiger Cry, and in preparation for their release concert on February 10th at the Red Scoot Inn  the band is posting one song a week on their illustrious Myspace site for streamed listening. Show Your Stripes is up this week on their site.  Swing on by and familiarize yourself with their music and their upcoming concerts, and their photo gallery is a must see.  Check at least once a week to keep hearing the amazing rock one song at a time…

Now that their MP3s are available - my warnings I have been issuing since October are being heeded.  Folks from all over the country are hopping on board the Laughing train because of the baritone sax, the vintage keyboards, the killer drumbeats, the raw energy and above all- the teal shirts and the white tigers with single tears.

With each Laughing performance I catch, I find myself in awe of what I see.  It is the sort of thing that people will not even believe is about to break out.  Imagine seeing the Unicorns  before America went bonkers for their irreverent, self-aware rock.  Now imagine them more polished and more talented.  That is about what the Laughing is like right now. Or, imagine seeing Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah  before they were exported from Brooklyn and excavated as the poster children of indie rock, turning to the person beside you and just hitting them on the arm to get their attention, and then giving a big goofy grin of approval in an effort to build instant unified camaraderie in the presence of something that is both immensely fun and good.  That is about what the Laughing is like right now.

Please read more about the boys in teal and see more pictures at the following links in which I have caught their exploits myself here, here, or even here.

As a bonus for reading the site, here is an exclusive track from the new EP available for download.  You are welcome.  I anticipate this as ‘best new music’ on Pitchfork in no time.

tonight - luther (dallas,tx)

For you Dallas people who didn't make it to the Cavern last night to watch the Radiant NYE performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, don't worry, there were plenty of people without you. Packed to the gills, the smoky little upper room of the bar went electric when the projector screen set up to watch the late night show flashed any sign of the bands name, and wen't crazy when their performance finally aired. The crowd in downtown NY was insane, Jimmy was funny, and Radiant came through with a damn fine performance.

Watch some of the footage, as well as some really funny "behind the scenes"/super-corperate-rock footage in this little documentary put together by Pontiac.

radiant television - luther (dallas,tx)

Hey, I mentioned a while back about how our home-town-boys-done-good, Radiant, won the Jimmy Kimmel Live! Best Unsigned Band in America contest, and now it is coming to fruition. Tomorrow evening, on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show will be the airing of their New Years Eve performance in Times Square. The show will broadcast at 11pm here in Dallas/Austin, but, since JKL is such a good show, you probably already know what time it comes on wherever you are.

They done did us proud. Go read all about the trip and up to date info on the band at their blog, Radiant Boys. You can purchase their great new album We Hope You Win here at good ol' Good Records (it's been one of their best sellers since it's release). Check back for a video of the performance and more news on Radiant here in the near future.

lazy sunday - luther (dallas,tx)

You can't go see the Chronicles of Narnia every day, so you should go see something much better. It's a shitty day out there Dallas, and I don't know about the rest of the world, but there is pretty much nothing to do tonight. So here's an idea. Go to a nice, heated movie theater and watch a brilliant, beautiful, and disturbing film.

I told you about this movie a while back, and I would suggest you get over to a nice theater, preferably one with a bar like the Magnolia or the Angelika and chill with some Del Toro magic.

tonight - luther (dallas,tx)

Hey, I know it's a little late notice, but if your looking for something fun to do tonight in the ol' Big D, head over to Good Records for a little Birthday fun with Mr. CJ. With phenominal bands The Octopus Project, Pilotdrift, Tree Wave, and Mom, you will not be sorry. Plus, I was there earlier and there was, and I kid you not, an inflatable bounce room that was Spiderman themed. How can you beat that? Presents are encouraged, so, you know. . .

8pm to who knows when. It rhymes, and it's awsome.

draft sessions, t-minus 1 week - luther (dallas,tx)

Thats right my Austin freinds, we bring you the goods. There are few things in this world that trump free pizza, and one of them is free... beverages. A cheap show with awsome bands isn't far behind that. So, it goes without saying that you can't miss this laughably great event. With classic goodtime Austin bands like Clap! Clap! and Foot Foot, and dance-the-night-away Dj's Orion and Jazz One, you are guarenteed a little more than the trivial $5 suggested donation to the talent suggests. So don't miss it, it's only a week away.

up - teitur - john (austin,tx)

Teitur (pronounced “tighter”) is a twenty something songwriter with an amazing mix of immense sound and that gosh darn “lo-fi” that all the kids are into these days.  This folkie from overseas is really growing on me. I have been listening to his second album Stay Under the Stars pretty much nonstop.  I hate to pull this “Recommended If You Like (insert band name here)” sure shot out… but I don’t have any choice : Bright Eyes - but not as annoying in the least.  There I said it.  Read whatever you want to into that, Teitur uses great strings, accordions, pianos, hand clapping and humming to enhance his acoustic driven songs all the while with engaging and heartfelt lyrics.  It’s really good.

Now here is another tricky part of Teitur; he has had tremendous support from the mainstream mom rock heartthrob John Mayer, who has shouted him out in various interviews.  Check this shit out:

“Music like this is like jet fuel on the fire of a broken heart.” John Mayer - Esquire Magazine

Don’t be so quick to turn your nose up at Mr. 'Your Body is a Wonderland’, though…  check out this clip of his VH1 show intelligently titled “John Mayer Has A TV Show” where the man dons a bear suit (!!!) and makes fun of his fans… he even makes self-aware ‘gay rumor’ jokes and old people jokes!  Hard to beat. This one is even better. Please click that link.

Anyway- I like Teitur’s music quite bit, it relaxes me in this oh so hectic post holiday season of recovering from family, work and booze.

the seeds of sxsw - luther (dallas, tx)

Well dudes and dudettes, thank God it's finally that time of year again. SXSW is on the horizon, and the parties are almost in sight. While it's wonderful that all you trust fund babies can buy those shiny wristbands, I heartily endorse coming to Austin just for the parties, afterparties, and day parties. If your johnny on the spot with your RSVPing, and I mean starting now, you will still be torn between what really cool thing to go to every hour of every day. All the free drinks don't help in the decision making process either.

It's still early in the game, but the names are already pouring in. Mind you, this is a place to see new music thats coming in, but here are just a few groups and individuals that I already know I want to see:

Bloc Party, Interpol, RJD2, Girl Talk, Winterkids, Octopus Project, Wierd Weeds, Theater Fire, Peter and the Wolf, Aqueduct, Okkervil River, Great Lakes, The Walkmen, The Young Knives, Snowden, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Morrissy, Envelopes, and Thunderbirds Are Now!

This is barely scratching the enormous surface of who will be in town that weekend. We will do our best to keep you updated with our little corner of preffered events, including parties, showcases, house parties, and day shows. Mind you, this is where, last year, I was surprise introduced to already classic artists, the likes of Spank Rock and Uffie. So check out this photo gallery from last years highlights, listen to a couple of choice tracks from artists we are looking forward to, and check back, because this will be priority numero uno for us for a while.

MP3: Envelopes - Sister in Love (Test Icicles Remix)

MP3: T-Birds are Now - ... And the Chocolate Mustache

MP3: Okkervil River - For Real

party ends presents: draft sessions! - john (austin,tx)

I am proud to announce the next Party Ends event in Austin Texas! This one is dubbed “Draft Sessions” and we will be presenting the masses with independent music and independent beer on January 20th of 2007.

This will be the first in a monthly series that PartyEnds.com, along with Independence Brewery , Raw Word Records , Insane-In-The-Meshbane Productions, Starke Circus and Groove Labs , have put together. We have all spent a lot of time and energy on this, and as a result we have CLAP! CLAP! and Foot Foot playing the first show! These are both bands that we dig and even if we didn’t – the novelty of two bands with only two repeated words between them is pretty tough to pass up. A $5 suggested donation to the bands gets you (and your karma) in the door and complimentary beverages provided by the fine folks at Independence Brewery. A commemorative cup will also be available for purchase.

Clap! Clap!

DRAFT SESSIONS! Saturday January 20th 2007 at Independence Brewery (directions) 8pm-12am be there. Foot Foot was described in Spin Magazine as “just plain out of their minds” and any one who has ever been to or even heard about a Clap! Clap! show knows that they “love to clap/ dance more than anybody.” Really. They have songs written about it. Clap! Clap! is a long time PartyEnds favorite who is doing us a solid and coming out of studio recording hibernation to play this oh so special of shows. Oh, and the delicious beer is a plus too. Draft Sessions will be taking place monthly and will continually feature the best in local music. Please join us for the inaugural kick off!

Go listen to Clap! Clap! here. And then listen to Foot Foot here. 1

around the bloc - luther (dallas,tx)

Alright, we have expressed our heartfelt love for that little band a few of you might have heard of before by the name of Bloc Party, and there really hasn't been much to say about them in a while. But with a new album, A Weekend in the City, due out soon, there is the inevitable and delightful news that a tour of the US is soon to be underway. With openers including Smoosh, The Strokes, and Final Fantasy, this should be one hip, dancable tour - despite the inevitably non-hip co patrons. Just remember that, even some great bands ( Beck, Radiohead, Spoon) get popular, and that doesn't make the show not worth going to. Just wear those blinders and focus on the music.

Unfortunately, Austin's SXSW is the only Texas date, so all my DFW Friends and I will have a bit of a drive ahead of us, and if it's a showcase, which I'm assuming it will be, a rather expensive wristband. Lets just hope we at least get one of the cool opening bands.

03-11 Seattle, WA - Paramount Theatre
03-12 Vancouver, British Columbia - Orpheum Theatre
03-13 Portland, OR - Crystal Ballroom
03-15 Austin, TX - SXSW
03-17 San Francisco, CA - Concourse Exhibition
03-19 Los Angeles, CA - Wiltern Theatre
03-20 Los Angeles, CA - Wiltern Theatre
03-23 Chicago, IL - Congress Theatre
03-24 Detroit, MI - Royal Oak Theatre
03-25 Toronto, Ontario - Kool Haus
03-27 Montreal, Ontario - Metropolis
03-28 Boston, MA - Orpheum Theatre
03-30 New York, NY - United Palace Theatre
03-31 New York, NY - United Palace Theatre
05-12 Bologna, Italy - Estragon
05-13 Milan, Italy - Alcatraz

***************************************************

Plus: One of the best aspects of Bloc Party's debut album, Silent Alarm, was it's phenomenal remix counterpart. In that grand tradition, but a little back wards, will be the released of an I-Tunes exclusive remix EP for The Prayer tomorrow. So go have a listen.

we're not here, please leave a massage - luther (dallas,tx)

So, at this point, John and I are both in Marfa on vacation, so, we don't really owe you anything here, do we? But, since we are such generous, caring, and downright incredible human beings, here is a little rundown of some cool stuff going on in DFW this weekend:

The Cavern (dallas): Friday night, the fifth, will be Black Heart Society, Calhoun, The Chemistry Set, and A Pacific Model. This is a pretty great local lineup for Dallas, and the Cavern is tha' bomb.

Haileys (denton): You can catch Calhoun and the Chemistry set instead (or again) on Saturday night, the sixth, at Haileys. Or check out Sunday, the seventh's, show; Cartwright and Prayer for Animals. I keep hearing great things about PFA; check this shit out.

Opening Bell Coffee (dallas): I've been hearing a lot about this Eaton Lake Tonics from Fort Worth lately, so if you have the chance, check out the myspace, check out the show tonight. He's also playing at Rubber Gloves later this month. Also at this show will be A Childlike Fear.

The Moon Bar (ft.worth): So, the Flashlight Party will soon be no more (dividing themselves between New York and Austin), so if you want some fun 80's night magic, you want to see these killer DJ's in thier prime, and you don't want to drive all the way to Denton to dance; check out this dance night on Thursday, the fourth.

Well, anyway, there is some fun stuff going on about town, so you have no excuse to come whining to us that your weekend was no fun. Unless you don't live in DFW.

jeff tweedy solo - luther (dallas,tx)

So, I recently found out that Mr. Jeff Tweedy, of Wilco and Uncle T. fame, will be rolling through the south on a tour warming up for the upcoming Wilco record reportedly coming out in March. So, I was sure it would be at a nice big venue, with all those 20 to 40 somethings that populated the last Wilco show I was at. No big deal, I had time, it was at the Granada, that place is huge. Right? Wrong: totally sold out. So I think I might invest in the drive to see him in Marfa, 10 hour drive, could be really cool, right? Wrong again, sold out.

So, if your lucky enough to be somewhere that everyone and their dog doesn't want to drop $50 to see Jeff sing some brilliant songs, go buy your tickets right now. here are the upcoming dates:

  • January 16th - Memphis - Germantown Performing arts Center*
  • January 17th - Nashville - James K. Polk Theater*
  • January 19th - Tulsa - Cains Ballroom
  • January 20th - Dallas - Granada Theater**
  • January 21st - Marfa - Liberty Hall**
  • January 23rd & 24th - Austin - Hogg Auditorium
  • January 26th - New Orleans - House of Blues
  • January 27th - Birmingham - Alabama Theater
  • January 28th - Atlanta - The Tabernacle
  • January 30th - Knoxville - Bijou Theater
  • January 31st - Charlottesville - The Paramount Theare**

tonight - luther (dallas,tx)

This looks like a heck of a good time. If your in the immediate area, don't miss this. If I wasn't leaving for Marfa at, like, 5am tomorrow, I would totally make it. Everyone, pour one for your homie who couldn't be there: me. Plus, free Fader magazines, hot.

the silent years - john (austin,tx)

There are a lot of mediocre indie rock bands out there that you are supposed to be excited about.   It’s hard to keep up with all the clever named bands from Brooklyn and Montreal that are set up to take the next big thing crown away from whoever it is these days… I can’t keep up.  I know what I like, and although yes, clever names can take you far in life; it boils down to accessibility and talent.

The Silent Years are notable in both regards.  They evoke a Thom Yorke/ Jeff Buckley tone that is similar to that of Austin exports What Made Milwaukee Famous. The Silent Years are supposedly great live and I am bummed that there appear to be no upcoming Texas dates… maybe one day I can marvel at the melodic motor city rockers and do a factual ‘compare and contrast’ between them and WMMF.

The rocking of track “This Town” is pretty unbelievably fantastic.  The melodies throughout the whole album are remarkable and are only matched by the mega fun, homemade diorama artwork.  Observe:

The Silent Years are truly hard to get enough of… See for yourselves with these MP3s!

the whole worlds top ten list - luther (dallas,tx)

I'm afraid I have one more list for you, it's interesting, though. Heart on a Stick concocted a  compilation of all the blog Top Ten album lists they could find into one averaged out list. These results are not what I would have expected, but thats what makes them so noteworthy. check this out:

  1. TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
  2. Decemberists - Crane Wife
  3. Joanna Newsom - Y's
  4. Bell & Sebastion - The Lifes Pursuit
  5. Band of Horses - Everything All the Time
  6. Thom York - The Eraser
  7. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
  8. The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
  9. M. Ward - Post-War

Weird, huh? As much as I like Radiohead, what was up with that Thom York album? Number 6? Riding the name, all the way. Anyway, thats what the kids are saying. . .

top ten songs of my year - luther (dallas,tx)

Well, in the "better late than never" category, I submit my best songs of 2006, despite the fact that it is now, completely and steadfastly, 2007. I was gonna have this great post all about wrapping up the year with my favorite songs yesterday, but the infamous fun and trouble of New Years Eve caught me by surprise. So, here you go. Songs that I listened to more than other songs this year, whittled down to my favorites. Whether they changed the way I thought of music, or just got my drunken ass on the dance floor, these tracks will always make me party like it's 2006. In no particular order:

Midlake - Roscoe from The Trials of Van Occupanther

Spankrock - Sweet Talk from Yoyoyoyoyo

Junior Boys - In the Morning from So this Is Goodbye

Lily Allen - LDN from Alright, Still

Ghostland Observatory + Ghostface Killah' - Ghostface Observatory from Car Stereo (Wars)
