the laughing and single frame at emos - john
Two people run PartyEnds. I live in Austin and Luther lives in Dallas. If you ever are not able to see one of our names next to the title of the post, a good way to tell if it’s me is if the event happened a long time ago. You see, I have a really bad habit of waiting to type things up. For instance these pictures of this great show have been sitting around my house since November 4th 2006. The Laughing and Single Frame played EXCELLENT sets opening up for the less than tolerable 400 Blows.
The Laughing has just finished their recording with the ever-great Cacophony Studios and presumably tracks should be finding their way online soon. Their set at Emo’s Lounge proves that the band is heading in a positive pattern of increasingly tighter and tighter live performances. The matching white denim and tiger printed ensembles are this time joined by simple symmetrical teal face paint. They take their gag seriously and it works for them. They have a giant tiger on stage with them and practically ignore it. They have giant crying white tigers on their backs and act as if it is the current trend. This is going to freak everyone out in a matter of time… once more people can hear them that is…
I am going to go ahead and call them the act that industry folks from out of town at SXSW are going to talking about at pre parties and after parties. Blogs everywhere are going to flip their shit. Yeah, that whole story. I’m calling it.
The bass playing of Laughing member Abram is unmatched. He carries the melody of the songs in a way that no other bass player in Austin can compete with. It is amazing to see him go up and down the fret board sneaking in riffs and variations on the tune the way normally associated with a flamboyant lead guitarist. The Laughing is mountain of talent. Drums-check, vocals- check, mustaches/beards-check, mini synth- check.
Single Frame is in between guitarists right now so this was their first performance without one. For a few songs I found myself filling in the missing guitar parts in my head but for the most part the two man configuration sounded fantastic. The Single Frame energy was as present as ever and the synthesizer parts were able to take a more assertive stand. The duo bounced thru their set with such proficiency and ability that the crowd seemed to feel a little sorry for out-of-town headlining band 400 Blows.
Please stay tuned to PartyEnds for the Laughing MP3s and

I'm pretty sure I understand, but I still think they are no good. I've heard some recordings that were alright, but their live show sucked ass.

400 blows wore slipknot costumes for crying out loud... the laughing pulls it off because it is silly and bright.
400 blows can 400 blow me.
