the boxing lesson - john

Here’s a local band to check out: the Boxing Lesson.  They are new to me, but have been a putting out music since 2003 and are able to boast about playing with the likes of American Analog Set, Coco Rosie and Lambchop among others…  After relocating to Austin from LA, songwriter Paul Wackawsky recruited two others to help flesh out his songs and the results are impressive.

They have been playing with some good looking shows around Austin (shared bills with Just Guns, the Story Of, etc.) and more notably has just put out a very strong release called ‘Songs in the Key of C.’ All 8 songs are full of guitar, analog synth and sampling enthusiasm!  As a result of being influenced by Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine AND using primarily multiple guitars and electronic instruments… the album comes off lush with sound.

If you take prevailing rhythms and progressions, layer sincere vocals, driving keys and sequences straight from a Granddaddy album you are looking the Boxing Lesson square in the eye.  Remember to keep your left up.

Please check out my favorite track from Songs in the Key of C below and visit the Boxing Lesson on Myspace.
