king dork news - john

When I heard that pop punk mastermind Dr. Frank (Frank Portman) wrote a book I went immediately to the young adult section of the bookstore and picked up a copy. It is absolutely brilliant. Especially if you consider it was written by a musician who has been critically panned for decades. Please pick up a copy of King Dork here.
The book is a coming of age about a guy who hates Holden Caulfield, lost his dad in a unexplained death, and spends time with his buddy (best. side kick. character ever) making up cool sounding band names, albums and stage names. I can’t help but compare it to a high school Nick Hornby masterpiece of High Fidelity proportions. It has more music banter than you can shake a stick at, it has detective adventures, it nails awkward teen angst, it has amazing boy/girl aspects, but above all- the humor is spot on. It was only a matter of time before I gushed about this masterpiece on the site but I find myself a little cheerless about the circumstances…
Will Ferrell’s production company has optioned King Dork for a movie film. I can only imagine what the paycheck for ol Dr. Frank ended up being… but it looks like the ball is rolling to get King Dork onto the silver screen. I acknowledge that the book would indeed be marketable in movie form but it is just so risky to take something that good and maintain the goodness. And it is also a slippery slope. Sure High Fidelity transferred well to the big screen but good lord did it ever SUCK as a Broadway musical
The 14-year-old dork protagonist must be cast very carefully. He must not be a Culkin. He must not be Haley Joel Osment. He must not be that asshole from Jerry McGuire. Surely with a production company headed by Will Ferrell I can believe that these things won’t happen but my paranoid mind worries nonetheless.
At least I know the soundtrack will kick ass and there will probably be a Will Ferrell cameo.

I would trust Will Ferrell with my life, so you should trust him with your tween book.

I bet one of the Caulkins could pull it off. There's still that one whos pretty young, and despite thier all being fucking crazy drug fiends, they are pretty good actors.
