the last laughing - john
If you are going to see a band called the Laughing you should expect a degree of humor or downright whimsicalness. But when you do see the band the Laughing you get this and more:
- You get matching white vests with white crying tigers screen printed on the back. YES!!!!
- You get an on stage entrance carrying a stuffed white tiger from Walgreen’s that could be straight out of Spinal Tap. YES!!!
- You get that very same tiger wearing a matching bandanna around its neck so that it blends in with the human band members. YES!!!
- Overall - you get a band that stands to be quite the talked about band in the very near future… starting here: at PartyEnds.
The Laughing is scheduled to record with the ever-popular Erik Wofford at Cacophony Studios soon, and sadly until then there is not audio proof for you to enjoy. All I have is positive words and optimistic photographs. To further illustrate their humor, please check out this introduction video that drummer Grant made at his house instead of recording actual music. This represents the sentiment of the group particularly well. Watch it here.
The group is comprised of the remains of the defunct Austin group Short Film with the addition of a member of PartyEnds favorites Economy. The band picks up where Q and Not U left off on their last album “Power”; dancy maraca fueled rock. The band launches with a basic rock structure of guitar, drums, bass and keyboard and at times steps up to three keyboards, and a two-person horn section. This is certainly different than what most Austin bands are doing, more so if you consider the matching outfits.
When I was growing up I watched every single episode of the Monkees sitcom, which my mom had on tape. Almost each episode they had to compete in a battle of the bands where the other bands would all have clever names and clever matching outfits… this is similar to the gag in Wayne’s World where when Tia Carrea* roundhouse kicks the drunk guy, we see the band the Jolly Green Giants in the background dressed just like the vegetable brand providing the name. It is a great joke, a great gimmick, and The Laughing does it extremely well without resorting to being called the White Tigers.
“The Tiger Cry” which the band takes its theme from comes from a menu item on an Austin Asian food restaurant that struck a particular cord with the group while spending some quality time together.
In no time Hot Topic will be selling these get ups, white tigers screen-printed on them, a single blue tear. Moms and dads across the land will remark- “back in my day we didn’t even know what a tiger cry was.”
Watch out for the laughing. Check them out online here.
* eidtors note: a band called Tia Carrera recorded thier last album at the very same studio that we link to in this article. It's a small world. - luther
