the horrors! the horrors! - john
CMJ is getting closer day by day and tons of music industry folk and music acts will be descending upon New York in addition to the already huge population that resides there (who hold a more intimate CMJ festival year round.) Who is going to be the most talked about band? Who is the next Arcade Fire? Where the party at, yo? These are the big questions.
Well, there is one band from the UK that is going to break out and have the music world in a fury. Especially with the mainstream popularity of the neo Goth acts like AFI and the recent Spin cover boys Panic! At the Disco setting the charts on fire- the Horrors might be the indie/ CMJ equivalent to these MTV-friendly, eyeliner wearing hot topic heartthrobs.
The Horrors, who rep Southend UK, have put out a few 7inches and been raising quite the eyebrow with their live shows. They play fast, livid and unruly sets, lasting now more than 15 minutes. I have not seen any live footage of the band, only read about it, but I have seen their amazing Chris Cunningham helmed music video! Can you imagine being 18 or so and working with the dude who made "All is Full of Love" with Bjork? Must be amazing. Their video for ‘Sheena is a Parasite’ can be seen HERE and probably not many other places because it is SO awesome that it has already been ‘deemed unsuitable for television.’ It is a really great video that shows me what the International Noise Conspiracy could have been like if they had replaced the hot girl with Apex Twin instead of just some Swedish guy.
I typically do not like bands with this much product in their hair and an emphasis on black, tight, pointy clothes but somehow the Horrors pull it off really well. I am more than intrigued. Their mystique is working… only a few hard to find EPs… another coming out on October 24th but not available in the United States… there is a feeling that everyone will be all over them in a matter of time, and rightful so, and that is an excited feeling.
