odds and (party) ends - john

Here is a bunch of great random stuff:

Check out Jolene’s excellent NYC SpankRock Pictures here.

Peep this amazing looking video coming out soon from Vice- starring Jackass Number Two’s Johnny Knoxville, David Cross and every one else that you like.

Giant congratulations to ‘Kangaroo Sexy’ who is the recipient of the new Whirl Wind Heat album “Types of Wood.” All he had to do is email us and get randomly selected. Yep. Pretty easy. We hope to do more contests in the future so please know that it is possible to win at PartyEnds… on the radio and in politics it is much more difficult.

Flavor of Love might be the best TV show ever. Episode one: some girl shits on the staircase. Boom. Beat that Project Runway. (Tim Gunn- you know I’m kidding- although some feces could really make this season more exciting)

The new 'Mountain Goats' is REALLY enjoyable. And by enjoyable- I mean that it makes me want to overdose on Tylenol PM because it is so damn depressing. Good Hodgkin’s calls it “the new ‘Either/Or’.” There are also radically heartbreaking MP3s to download there. Cop that.

There is a really young band coming out of Houston that somehow is exploding onto the scene the way Borat told Conan O’Brien: “I want to make liquid explosion on Queen Latifa, HIGH FIVE!” The Screwston lads are called BoJones and are currently lined up to play ACL Fest and CMJ- that is not too shabby for such a young band. They are a talented group of kids that will get a lot of good praise from playing a festival like ACL. I am just happy to hear about something coming out of Houston that doesn’t have grillz… and to make a really awkward Borat analogy.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs just announced their upcoming tour dates! I am very pleased to see Austin, Dallas and Houston all on the itinerary.

To make up for my regretful Borat thing above: check out the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs video HERE Who knows, you might be in it!

As always- thank you so much for checking out the site and come back often. We might be going thru a bit of a DRY SPELL with a move on the horizon, but we are still here in spirit. These colors don’t run. Have a good day.

making the moves - luther

So, my wife and I are about to move to Dallas from Ft Worth and, at least for the next week or so, Party Ends might take a bit of a hit. I do all of the updates and posts from my computer, and unfortunatly, my computer will be in a stuffy little locked room in a warehouse full of stuffy little locked rooms while we stay at my sister-in-laws for the next week, until our apartment in ready for us to move into.

And so, to tide you through our seven-day famine, here is a little of what I'v been listening to a lot lately. Keep your eyes open, though, and check back with us soon, cause I could find a cyber-cafe, or sneek into some elementary school, and then, BAM!. So, yeah, listen to these:

Junior Boys - In the Morning

Editors - Bullets

Man Man - Skin Tension

Mew - Am I Wry, No?

best. show. ever. bonde do role/css/diplo - john

Incredible.

Between the acts from Brazil, Diplo and Peachcake  earlier in the week... I am completely spoiled to amazing live performances. The sound at the Parish Club was the perfect place to see bands whose enjoyment relies so much on loud, danceable beats.

Bonde Do Role was the act I was most excited about in the lineup.  DJ Gorky warmed up the crowd with highlights from his mix tape ‘Electro Pancada’ then he was joined by the rest of Bonde Do Role- a short pale girl with bleach blond hair and two tattoos of Dali’s melting clocks on her shoulders and a slender dude with camo pants and a Shaq jersey.  Throughout their amazingly energetic set they freaked danced an audience member, humped each other and wore crazy LED light glasses.  During her first stage dive it seemed that I was solely responsible for catching her as my fellow crowd members backed away.  Thanks guys.  As you can imagine holding a Brazilian girl is not contusive to taking a quality picture, so my apologies.

In a perfect world, I could befriend the girl from Bonde Do Role, and she could come hang out with my friends and I, run up to strangers on the street yell in their faces, freak dance them then get another cool ass tattoo.  We would be great friends.  She could teach me about what her awesome sounding Brazilian lyrics mean and I could teach her what little information I know about bras with support.  Because she really could use some schooling in that department

CSS was full of energy and pulled the same stage diving routine as Bonde Do Role.  There was no need for three guitarists but damn were they ever from Brazil and therefore could inherently be fantastic performers.  Their pop cultures references paved the way for their greatness and even now as I write this days later… still brings a smile to my face (DFA1979, Paris Hilton, etc)

Diplo did a few cool tricks with some VJ software including the brilliant mash of the “Whisper Song” with the Beastie’s “Sure Shot” over it with video accompaniment.  He did a handful of other Hollertronix favorites, played his obligatory jamz (Walk Like an Egyptian, and a Houston rap set to close out the night) and therefore- he kept the crowd dancing until the Parish closed.  It was an utter blast.

 CSS - Art Bitch -

Bonde Do Role - Solta O Frago -

   Upcoming Parish shows include:

Meryll and This Will Destroy You on August 12th

Final Fantasy on August 18th

DJ Mel’s famous Rock the Casbah on August 19th

All should be a blast!

Check out the photo section for more hotness!

summer extrav-o-ganza breakdown- john

“Now if you never been to Texas, there's a picture to paint Cause we doing it real big, in case you thinking we ain't”

Ahhh Bun- B…. so eloquent.

We by no means did it alone, but I am very proud to say that the PartyEnds Summer Extrav-o-ganza was the biggest party of the summer in Austin. Saturday August 5th 2006 marked the day some of Austin’s best of the best came together to shake rumps, get the masses drunk, synergize. We do it real big, just in case you think that we ain't.

It was a one of a kind party. And without all of the sponsors’ help (green potato ventures, Austinist, Sparrowhead, SUPER!ALRIGHT! Independence Brewery) it would not have been possible. Luther and I were thrilled to be a part of such a great event and not just hang out and play my new Contra game for Playstation 2. if you guys have any sweet ass codes –send them on over to partyends@gmail.com

The Stay Gold Djs warmed up the night as the crowd trickled in to form the beer line and eventually PartyEnds heroes Economy took the stage and played and excellent set jam packed with crowd interaction, rapid (often nonsensical) handclaps and high/low harmonies. Economy gets two awards for the evening: the award for Best Profanity in Songs and Best Running Through the Crowd and Hitting Me in the Chest With a Microphone. It should be noted- there were no other contenders in this category.

Tacks, the Boy Disaster a mind-bogglingly great 4 piece indie rock band went up to bat next and had the inside of the Gallery Lombardi completely packed. Photos were snapped, people sang along, and most of all the band rocked the fuck out. With the keyboard leading the group through (at times) be-bop syncopation and beautiful and (at times) insistent vocals the result was engaging The guitar showed restraint letting the bass take the melody of sections of songs and the percussion was hands down top-notch. The crowd ate it up and I could sense them thinking in unison: “when are these guys going to explode and have everyone in America comparing them to Arcade Fire?” people are going to be as crazy about Tacks the Boy Disaster as Flavor Flav is crazy about clocks and Latino woman. Just watch Flavor of Love 2 if you don’t believe me.. oh yeah and order their great EP here

Next Cue managed to mellow out the crowd while at the same time completely captivating them. Local luminary Wiley Wiggins provided projections for the group who had legions of devoted fans. Between the haunting violin, the thumping percussion, and the whole group being cloaked in bizarre projections- Cue created an atmosphere at the party that was a blast. The mood harmonized their instrumental building/ swelling music so well it completely eased my mind of worrying about the TABC busting down from the ceiling with night vision goggles and laser pointers on the end of their guns. Sure, we were more than legal at the party with TABC certified hired hands - but the TABC is still scary. Usually when I need to relax I throw on some Dirty Three at my house…. from now on I will be alternating that with Cue.

MP3: Cue: the Sun has Risen Twice Today

You can pick up their album here.

The Lemurs finished out the night out with some amazing rock and roll. Think about Billy Idol hanging out with Franz Ferdinand discussing hype machines the Artic Monkeys. The group has a sound that is very likeable right now and for a good reason. The lemurs commanded the party and kept the crowd captivated even while the tension was rising with the beer depleting.

The whole night was really heightened by the inventive projections of Erik Horn of SUPER!ALRIGHT! who custom mixed and projected beach themed clips from a wide array of amazing beach movies (Beach Blanket Bingo, Psycho Beach Party, Surf Nazis Must Die etc) to each of the bands’ sets. He was able to make beach blanket dancers synch right up with the performances and provided quite a treat for the hundreds of people who were not able to see band on the ground level stage but could soak in the loud music and the amazing projections. Try and find another party with a giant Annette Funicello on the wall. Try it.

It was a very special evening and PartyEnds is very grateful to everyone who picked up trash, pumped kegs, threw bottles at moving trains, and donated money to make things all go smoothly. Thank you. Please check out the photos.

the party - luther

So, it finally came and has finally gone. . . and it was ridiculous. Two nights ago, in the heart of Austin at Gallery Lombardi, where all the action is, we unleashed the big Summer Party, presented by Party Ends, Green Potato Ventures, Sparrowhead, The Austinist, and Super!Alright!, and it was off the fucking hook. Up against a regular lineup of Saturday night Austin activities, as well as a sold-out Ghostland Observatory show, the turnout was more than we had hoped for, and almost more than we could handle.

Between the phenomenal bands, the free booze, and the trains rollin' by 20 yards away, somehow nobody got hurt and everyone seemed to have a pretty good time. With a steady flow of Independence beer and Titos vodka, the night was forever young and the bathroom line seemed only to grow.

The first band up was Economy, followed by Tacks, the Boy Disaster, then Cue and finally the Lemurs; all of whom played incredible shows and not only kept their own fans happy, but enthralled everyone else within earshot. The kids just kept on coming and every band rocked the block until we closed the doors around 2am. To the spinning tunes of Stay Gold, we had to push and prod the last straggling dancers out the door, stumbling like hipster Jesus's across the alcohol and sweat lake that used to be the floor.

The scene defied description, but you might be able to get an idea in our photos section, and checkout the Austinist for a rundown of their own. Check back later this week as we dissect the bands performances further, and release some details about our next run of projects, parties, and general popular-cultural alchemy.

economy at jesse’s bed and breakfast - john

Jesse’s Bed and Breakfast is basically the house of two dudes who host live music performances for local and touring acts.   It’s put up in the same vein of once great (RIP) Church of the Friendly Ghost in Austin.  The name of the venue is misleading: the art space is not run by anyone named Jesse (Michael and Stu) and despite the large refrigerator of communal beer, did not seem like any bed and breakfast I had heard of. What it lacks in accurate naming it more than makes up for quality sound.  As I am currently in the process of selling some unwanted furniture, I was impressed that the whole house was fairly empty and therefore perfect for a DIY music venue.  I was also impressed to see some bitching low budget sound proofing in a living room…

I could go on and on about how cool it is for two twenty somethings to get an underground venue off the ground, but I will spare you. Hopefully you will be hearing more about the good work they are doing here at PartyEnds.

The act that brought me out to the venue in the first place was Austin’s Economy. For this show the duo performed without strings and played a better sounding and more involved set of recorded and new songs to a small and intimate crowd with two keyboards and array of plump loops and samples.  Even though the crowd was slim the energy and enthusiasm of the group was immense.

It is truly amazing to witness beat maker Cordon Simmons clap, stomp and stir up the audience during the more upbeat tracks.  Why hordes of nubile ladies aren’t throwing panties up on stage for this up and coming group is beyond me.  Economy evokes joy division, why?, bjork beats, and postal service.  You will love them.  Hit them up on myspace.com/economy and for a REAL treat: see the band live.

MP3 : Economy:  Lost in Motion

Austin folks:  Save the date for August 5th.  The official PartyEnds mega summer blowout will be going down at Gallery Lombardi.  here is the full line up of amazing artists: Economy! Tacks, the Boy Diaster! Cue! and the Lemurs!

The party is being co sponsored by Green Potato Ventures, Indepenence Brewery, Sparrowhead Design, Super!Alright!, and the Austinist

A happening is in the works for the DFW area as well yo.  Stay tuned!

the big p.e.'p - luther

So, just in case you don't know either John or myself, or you haven't seen the flier prominently located on the left hand side of your current screen, you might want to check out the killer party going down in ol' Austin town this coming Saturday, August the 5th. Thats right, it's the first party sponsored by your's truly, Party Ends, and it's gonna be crazy.

Party Ends, green potato ventures, Independence Brewery, Sparrowhead, Austinist, and SUPER!ALRIGHT! will be throwing down the choice beats and hip bands that you know are gonna be awesome; cause it's us. Gallery Lombardi, a local fine arts venue, will be the setting, in the midst of local visual artists, while Austin favorites the Lemurs, Cue, Taks the Boy Disaster, and Economy rock your faces off in, I'm sure, a very fine and artistic way.

So come check it out, and watch for updates. It should be a lot of fun and worth the drive or air fair from any point on the globe (excluding cities not in or around Austin Proper)!
