Everybody’s favorite mega energetic punk band the Riverboat Gamblers suffered a blow as member Ian McDougall was crashed into by an automobile that may or may not have been driven by a terrorist who hates fun and who was involved with the make up team for Disney’s Old Dogs. (Click that Old Dogs link. It’s good.) Well, across the country, music communities have been organizing and raising money for McDougall’s hospital bills and tomorrow night Austin will be throwing another chunk of change into the bucket. The basic premise of the event is that local DJs will be spinning local music. DJ Manny, DJ Orion, PrepMode, Bigface, Richard Gear and DJ Je were all given cds from 10 Austin bands to create their unique twists via the powers of “remixing.” Anyway- the whole thing goes down at the Mohawk Thursday evening and your hard earned money goes to a good cause. Oh and something tells me that there will be plenty of Red Bull product and swag ripe for the taking.
The prolific DJ Orion took the liberty of sharing his material for the night and guess what- it’s great.
His edit of the Gamblers’ Dissdissdisskisskisskiss works the break downs and the riffs into a slight dancefloor edge that won’t outrage the punk purists and yet can still make the kids with the ironic non-prescription glasses feel like they have some new dance punk to rock out to. Everybody wins.

Orion’s take on the Octopus Project standout track Truck is a nice and mellow interpretation of a song originally riddled with Jason Statham quality muscle. This also shows the other side of the coin as to Orion’s abilities in “the beat laboratory”. He can show restrain and smooth out an already dancefloor rocking track. Cop this:
