It’s not that often that a video, music or otherwise, gives me a legitimate ‘howdy’do dat’ feeling, with the answer %90 of the time these days being as simple as ‘computers’. But this brilliant new bit of one room genius from the Most Serene Republic, for their single Heavens to Purgatory, and directed by Ben Steiger Levine is a legitimate head scratcher. Even if you work out how they got their limbs through and away from the walls, and synced everyone up, they still seamlessly moved us around the room featuring the same people over and over. And you’ve got some stop motion in there for good measure.Very nice.
The song is pretty nice too, the male female vocals bounce off of each other well, and harmonize just short of sweetly, giving the simple tune a deeper complexity and complimenting the heady, but exuberant lyrics. The varied instrumentation has a nice modern Americana vibe with a definite pop sensibility, though it’s not flaunted by any means. Check it out:
OK, maybe a little scary.
