Today kicks off the Dismember the Alamo Zombie Film Festival at the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek and there are some excellent screenings this year. The festival is providing a chance to see classics, cult favorites and brand new foreign zombie movies in glorious 35mm as well as a hodge podge of short films and all sorts of other surprises including a brand new Horror Remix and a custom made DtA Left4Dead LAN party in the lobby. Needless to say I am as excited as I have been the previous two years of the festival.
After a super fun time at the zombie walk this past Sunday (where there was a zombie dog, zombie babies and of course, a zombie flasher with a dismembered member) I am nice and primed for taking in a few zombie movies! Tonight kicks it off with a “Night of Night Ofs” featuring Californian 80s girls taking on the undead in Night of the Comet and a special screening of Night of the Living Dead with a LIVE music score from PKWProductions.
Friday night is the Canadian film Pontypool, based on the recently reprinted book Pontypool Changes Everything. This is the first chance for Texans who weren’t at the SXSW screenings last year to see it on the big screen. This one is commonly referred to as a “thinking man’s zombie film” which is intriguing. Then, on the other end of the spectrum a new installment of Horror Remix is being screened featuring Flesheater (1988) and the Video Dead (1987) along with a ton of extras. Horror Remix is increasingly becoming one of the best place for lovers of bad movies to met up, drink beer and crack up. Attention parents- please don’t bring your children to Horror Remix, at the last one you were incredibly distracting and will probably have to fork over a second mortgage to pay your 4th grader’s inevitable therapy bills. Long live Horror Remix!
Halloween night, the festival is showcasing short films from all over the world. In the past these screenings have gotten down right rowdy and are always packed with enthusiasts. Then stick around for the Norwegian Nazi zombie flick Dead Snow’s Texas premiere.
I just got the go ahead to give away a pair of tickets for each day of the festival! Let’s start with TONIGHT. Let’s kick Thursday off with some good ol’ fashioned Screeching Weasel! The riff used to blow my mind in middle school; this song is still super fun!
