While driving up and down the lovely Texas high ways this weekend, one record got a repeat play thanks to it’s perfect Friday Night Lightsy style. The Dallas group Shapes Stars Make marries Explosions in the Sky and Braid. Ultimately, they sounds like what their band name would lead you to believe they sound like. The band took their part instrumental and part emotional lyric based songs straight to the source of their inspirations’ records.; producer John Congleton. Congleton, who has helped define a post rock genre with his work for the 90 Day Men, Appleseed Cast, Explosions in the Sky and the Paper Chase, worked his magic on Shapes Stars Make and his epically angsty fingerprints are indeed all over it. Their debut self titled EP is an excellent sampling of a talented band who I can imagine is amazing to watch live.
The EP is available on iTunes and is highly recommended if you have a trek on I-35 planned anytime soon.
Here is a NEWish seven plus minute instrumental song called Sunrise. I would highly recommended this if you are the least bit interested in the style of Explosions in the Sky…. check it out:
