Wow. This is a nice little August surprise. Backspin Records just announced a plump schedule of in-store performances by some of Austin’s finest for the month. In addition to some hot names there are also some efforts in community building and democracy that can only be good. The open table events are sure to draw out the scratching hip hop heads as well as borderline-creepy vinyl fetishists. For me, the exciting names to see on this (terrific) flyer are turntablist Nicknack and the incomparable Bird Peterson on the 14th & 21st respectively. The first act up on the 13th is Motorcyle Maus, coming to Austin all the way from West Philadelphia. Why did I think that every artist from West Philly would attempt to use spray paint as underarm deodorant instead of play guitars? Well, I did and, I am an adult. I can admit that I was wrong. These guys and girls use guitars.
If you look VERY closely at the top right of this advert, you will see a tiny little asterisk that indicates a beautiful thing. Free beer. Mark this in your iCals.
Frosty beverages or not- Backspin Records is always a good place to hang out and loiter at. Who knows you might be like me and walk away with the vinyl soundtrack for both Urban Cowboy AND Urban Cowboy 2!
Here is one of my favorite annual summer tracks from Bird where he does the unprecedented and completely silly and lays Ludacris atop some good ol fashion tejano to produce a Voltron-like jam. Pop the trunk and let this one bang.

Sneaky little asterisk.
