stjar trek – luther

May 12th, 2009

spockWell, it was a big weekend. There was a phenomenal turnout at the Birds Barbershop grand opening, the Austin Election went kind of badly, and, of course, Star Trek came out. Now, I’ll be up front with the fact that I’m not a trekk-y / -er / -ophile, but I spent a fair few hours of my childhood anxiously watching STtNG for the next excitingly terrible computer generated graphic or conveniently sparse planet, and it still holds a deep and embarassing place in my heart. I’m also unabashedly in man love with William Shatner, possibly the coolest dude to ever walk on the planet Earth. Unfortunately, niether of these facts have a lot to do with the new JJ Abram’s adaptation.

Those things aside, I’m also a big fan of damn good movies, which is what this film is. It’s awesome to see the references and re-imaginings of the old Star Trek franchise brought into a much more congnisent and thought out universe, and also to see just how much the incredibly well cast youngsters in the main roles channeled their decades past counterparts, but those are only icing on the cake. In a similar, but much more obvious and deeper way, this film archives the same effects as the brilliant Batman Returns and Casino Royal in creating a much more modernly relatable, gritty, and overall legit experience than anything in it’s titular legacy. If you can overlook one or two overly convenient plot moves and maybe just a little too much Spock, I can find little to fault in what will hopefully be the first of more – but hopefully a tasteful not-too-many- excellent Sci-fi films.

All of this being said, let’s enjoy how funny Leonard Nimoy really is with the amazing track from his respectable discography.

For awhile,I was concerned Star Trek was a dying franchise. Then JJ Abrams came along. Nice touch. The scene with kid Kirk was a tad too quirky in the movie, even if it was hot in the movie trailer. Star Trek XI breathed new life into this precious Roddenberry world. I’d like to see all of this Enterprise cast recurrence for much more outings. I spent my youth with the classic series. Heck, my pops got us a color Television just so we could see Star Trek each and every Friday afternoon. Today, I’m stuck on these new famous actors. In MHO, they have absolutely breathed life into their characters and made them their own. I, for example, am looking towards more.
