It’s been a while. Hi Lets catch up on Austin music stuff shall we?

* Thanks for coming out to the PartyEnds’ Neiliyo, Emcee Eats, Sampler & Sons show at Cheer Up Charlie’s recently! That was a fun night and everyone jumped up and down and danced. That was a cool thing that we all did y’all! Pro tip: the vegan trailer out back sells Topo Chicos, the inside bar does does not. But they do have good seasonal stuff from Live Oak Brewing.

* This Austin band Hidden Ritual seems pretty cool.

* The Carrots played their first show in two years, played a ton of new tracks from their new full-length vinyl and then reminded everyone that it was their last show. Ever. Bummer. But it could be like a soap opera and they come back in a few years… we’ll see.

* There are sadly no new shows listed for the Charles Edward Cheese Band. Life is unfair.

*A bro at Wheatsville last night told me how much he likes the Bad Lovers while I was checking out a special deal on Munster cheese. Totally fun garage rock. Feels like one of those Hotel Vegas sort of bands.

* I’m told that I need to give Bobby Jealously another chance. So, I guess I’ll do that.

* The Molybden album “Songs from Lincoln” is pretty amazingly somber and beautiful AND features a killer cover of Rosanne Cash’s Seven Year Ache.

* Pitchfork announced this morning that Bill Callahan recorded his next Drag City release at Cacophony studios and that it’ll come out 9/17. The title once again uses frequent Callahan vocabulary words “dream” and “river.”

* So there you have it, that’s about all there is to know. Oh, there are some festivals coming up I think. You should go to the Fun Fun Fun Fest one. All of your favorite acts and acts you thought you’d never get to see live will be playing.

Here are some random Austin MP3s for dat ass.

MP3: Hidden Ritual: Barbarians

MP3: Charles Edward Cheese Band: Let’s Eat Pizza

The neo-mainstreamization of “twerking it” started to creep into households with Queen Diva Big Freedia and has somehow elevated to American sweetheart Miley Cyrus posting videos of herself dressed in some sort of dino-cow costumed dropping and wopping. It’s weird, but it’s also…. pretty cool (to be read in a Vanessa Bayer from SNL voice)

So- it’s was only a matter of time before amazing internet post-modern yuks yuks start to present themselves. The latest silly awesomeness to grace the world wide web comes from the Miami Bass overlords DEATH JAM featuring the upstanding & mysterious citizen “Young Lauderdale™”

This video is part caricature and part ignorance. It is all wonderfully fun. This is the only place on the internet you’ll see Paula Deen and Taylor Swift shaking it. Please please please watch the whole thing. You will be rewarded with your very own twerk team of Disney characters in the afterlife.

Amongst the boarder patrol workers and real deal cowboys is a thriving creative culture of musicians, authors and grilled cheese specialists.

Last year, Jessica Moore, the Canadian, banjo-wielding singer-songwriter visited the small town where she absorbed the tumbleweeds and honkytonks and to finalize her debut solo effort Beautiful in Red. The completed nine songs album is carefully packed with organic texture that manage to blend the unique ambiance of Marfa and Toronto, both where she lived, wrote and recorded

Sonically the songs move from pedal steel, piano and even a pack of cigarettes played cleverly as percussion in a way that makes it certain that cup-rhythm master P.O.S would approve . Listen below. The standout on each track is Moore’s voice, which is sometimes layered on top of itself 5+ times to form warm and lush harmonies. It’s a knockout.

Although mostly somber, there are more buoyantly upbeat songs to Beautiful in Red (such as the title track) but each song has a gentle darkness to it. Every track is full of deep melodic vocal hums, minor key laced finger picking and haunting, elegiac imagery. It’s addicting.

Not only are more and exciting more shows taking place in Marfa (with Jeff Mangum playing there just last night!) but it seems more and more exciting music is being made there. Keep an eye on the intriguing and fresh folky songs of Hotel Brotherhood as well! Oh, ALSO- the wonderfully mellow Molybden is performing in Austin nowadays but has Marfan roots.

Beautiful in Red is available now for free listen on Bandcamp and if you’re feeling like kicking in a few Loonies (That’s what they call a dollar in Canada! Who knew?! ) to own it and listen to it from the comforts of your portable device, you can get it digitally now or preorder the physical album which comes out early May. For more information on Canadian culture- please refer to the Kroll Show sketch Wheels Ontario.

The video is nothing special, a half-assed 5D shoot in a studio sound room, no doubt between sessions of actual work- who’d have thought she was so busy- and is more a vehicle for her crowbarred lyrics and dirty flow. The track, however, is Wednesday-tastic, in that it’s good enough to distract you for a few minutes during work.

Perhaps not crushed, but certainly smushed under the weight of an awful lot of work lately, I find myself sometimes seeking out the etherial relief of some pretty, light music. To salve my ears after they start to crack and bleed under the driving thump of some minimal electronic bullshit I’ve cued up to push me through another deadline, I’ve begun to amass a small collection of standby tracks and records, soothing balms for my aching psyche to slather liberally all over my earballs in their time of need. At the top of the stack, lately, has been the Limininas.

With a name as hard to spell as it is to phonetically sound out the first time you read it, their music is quite the opposite. Simple, garagey, fun, and so French it verges on caricature, the small amount of edge each track carries is perfectly balanced against the downy soft vocals and overt and calculated naiveté. The fuzzy psych and fem-Gainsbourg lackadaisicality is as appropriate for chilling out with a well mixed drink after a hard day at work as it is for scoring a stylish evening gathering. And some of the more stomping tracks, with their simple four fours floor toms and rattling tambourine, would make for heady drunken dance numbers.

It’s worth investigating their entire, modest collection- two full lengths so far, and a few EP’s- but my favorite tracks are the dreamy “Longanisse” and the choppy clapper “Je Suis Une go-go Girl” (a live version of which there is a video below).

Also check out their pretty rad music video for “Down Underground” here.

Suffering from nostalgia of the 80s sounds and late 90s video camcorders resolution? This video’s got you covered. The new video from Kodiak Fur is pure fun! All I know about Miami aside from there are a ton of murder there all the time in whatever police district Dexter works in. Oh, oh but now I know that they’ve got a hotbed of fuzzy collective-y music groups. Kodiak Fur is a hot and sticky collaboration between 4 Floridians including Albert Vargos and the wunderkind producer Mr. Familiar. They seem like fun-loving folks.

Tonight, the Mohawk will be graced by Kingdom of Suicide Lovers + Videoing (album release) + A Tiger Named Lovesick + The Diamond Age + and tunes from DJ Richard Henry. Look- here’s PROOF! Admission includes a KILLER CD with 10 tracks from the artists for FREE! PartyEnds has partnered with SlackElectric to spread the aural pleasures of these fine artists. Just like you dear reader- we’re always on the prowl for something ear catching to jam out to and these artists get the stamp of approval for being the newest in new, waxingist and milkingist performers around.

The CD, just like the show tonight, features:

Kingdom of Suicide Lovers- This Austin super post-punk group features a dude from Glorium, and two folks from Faceless Werewolves. Their garaged out tunes have been on another complication for some label called “Matador” that people seem to like. Be sure to pick up their 7inch at the show or at a local record store near you or else you run the risk of being a real jerk! The FREE comp that’s at the show tonight features some material from their forthcoming record!

Videoing- From the ashes of Single Frame comes Videoing, and tonight is the first night you can hold their record in your mitts. This arty Austin group has got smarts and I’m so excited that they are starting to play out more and more. Anytime a drummer can sing at the same time it’s impressive. But I’m not talking background vocals or the occasional contribution to a simple harmony- I’m talking full-on fronting a band while playing the weirdest time signatures out there. Videoing puppetmaster Adreon Henry makes audiences stop sipping Lonestars and say aloud in unison “NO WAY! HAVE MERCY!” The beats and vocals created by Henry are are aided by the piercing guitar work of Brendan Reilly and the dark fantasy keyboards/tart tart female vocals of Jen Bradley.

A Tiger Named Lovesick- This group is an Austin institution that’s been together longer than most marriages last. They never fail to astound me with their super tripped brand of out shoegaze. Get to know their giant wall of spacey sound if you don’t already!

The Diamond Age- Venturing down from Dallas, The Diamond Age sounds, tastes and smells scratchy and warm like a wool sweater…oh wait- since it’s summer in Texas, let’s roll with the simile a wool bathing suit. Looping organic sounds over and over and adding droning guitar effects makes for lovely tracks criss crossed with levels and loaded with textures that deliver an 8-armed one-man-band rockin’ good time.

Pick up the free CD sampler tonight at the Mohawk and play it for all your best amigos!

Long live physical media.

Yes! A new release from Baltimore’s high prince of live-action–panic-attack-orchestral-movements-in-the- electronic-forest : Dan Deacon! The new album is called America and comes out Aug 27th and if you preorder the limited edition trippy-translucent vinyl it comes with a giant flag featuring the album art work and for you uber-hip tapeheads- it also comes out on cassette.

The first video just debuted online for the song True Thrush and it’s one of the most fun and silly things ever. Essentially the game of telephone crossed with an art school student turned career advisor’s version of a test of memory. The video takes a weirdo scene and has it recreated from memory by different humans, and so on and so on and on and on and on. Lordy, lord- if it isn’t amazing .

There ‘s nothing more fun that construction paper being kicked around and the word “pizza.” Directors Dan Deacon and Showbeast’s Ben O’Brien know this. Observe:
